This is just something I thought would be interesting to hear opinions on
These are a few knives I think for the average person opening packages cutting cardboard letters and the like that would be great for someone who doesn't have alot to spend .
Kershaw cryo
Tough knife that holds a good edge

Ontario rat 2
Excellent slicer light in the pocket

Kershaw dividend
USA made perfect size can be bought for 30 to 40 dollars.

Buck 501
Very light strong lock USA made. Good all around knife with decent steel.
These are a few knives I think would serve anyone well.

Let's here some other opinions

I agree with the Ontario rat, but I like the rat 1, and the upgrade to D2 steel makes it leaps and bounds better.

Ontario RAT 1, RAT 2, Esee Zancudo, or Esee Avispa any of them in D2. All of them can be had for $40 shipped or less. Ruike P801 is $30 with 14c28n Scandi steel. Hard to overlook that!

Maybe the Buck 110 LT. Bottom knife in first photo. Really decent durable heat treat from my experience with it as a work knife.
$26
The only thing I would change would be a more rubberized material with the diamond texture on the sides of the handle like my grail with the custom scales. These two knives are not in the same class. My Grail is a way lighter duty knife but I love it. Brad Zinker Urban Trapper with KreyEx handle.

I would like to get behind and recommend an Opinel but the way the blade locks up and won't pivot if I get a single rain drop on it . . . some say soak in oil.
And then put it in my pocket ?
errrrr . . . . ?
Kind of fun to fool around with . . . but don't sneeze on it or it won't close.

Oh for sure. If a person can spend some real money two thumbs up.
The guys talked me into getting a Wharncliffe Delica.
Glad I did.

What are everyone's thought on the spyderco tenacious. I'm considering trying one just to have a different brand and style of knife

Do it! If you like the looks of it you'll love it in use. Similar ergos to a Manix2 with no choil.

I offered a friend that doesn't know much a about knives (or brands) to choose one from a pile of blades ranging $20-$200 and he chose the Dividend, FWIW. Carries it every day and still loves it.

I like the Ontario Rat folders and Spyderco Byrd knives. Both are great options.

I am surprised. I've seen alot of negative about the cryo 2. I've been sitting on my porch for an hour whittling and it has just now lost the shaving edge. Still sharp enough to use. I like the cryo so had to get the cryo 2. It seems pretty good to me

Sanrenmu 7094. Best damn 15 dollars I've ever spent on a knife. Love it.

This is the worlds best all around inexpensive edc knife.

The Victorinox recruit is only $17
It's well made in Switzerland out of some kind of great steel
It's compact and lightweight
You get 2 knife blades
A cap lifter
Large standard screwdriver
A can opener
Small standard driver
Phillips driving capability
A toothpick
And tweezers

It's non threatening
Everyone knows the name
And it's very readily available

If I wasn't a knife nut this could easily be the only folder in my pocket for the rest of my life baring I don't lose it...ect.
It's not necessary my favorite knife or anything, but if I'm realistic with myself I know it's pretty much all I really need.

Victorinox SAK or an Ontario RAT Model 2. Both the D2 and AUS-8 models kick ass and are under $40.

I love the tenacious. Cuts well and is razor sharp out of the box. Carried mine for about 5 years now and it's held up well. Just bought another one as a matter of fact. I've owned much more expensive knives but for edc I keep going back to my tenacious.

I had a Tenacious for a bit, the ergonomics didn't do much for me and it's a pretty wide knife, so it'll take up a good amount of real estate in the pocket.

You had some really good picks there, you might want to check out the Steel Will Cut Jack 3.5in, D2 steel and a choil for $40ish.
It was probably mentioned but the Skyline has a good reputation too.
The Rat is a great choice though.

If we're counting SAK's then I'd say one of those, but if we're talking pure knife I'd say any of the first three you mentioned would be fantastic and are the best 3 options (cryo/r2d2/dividend). Personally I'd go with the rat, but if I were giving it as a gift to someone new to knives I'd give them the cryo. The assist is really appreciated by people not used to knives, and it gives them the option of thumbstuds or flipper depending on which they end up liking more (plus its the cheapest).

As for the delica - it would be a great option but given you could buy two r2d2s for the price of one delica, I think the rat wins.

After the last couple of price increases, I don’t consider the Delica a budget folder anymore.
