I was wondering what is the best butterfly knife, and where can I get them on the net?

It is commonly beleived by masters and anyone who has owned or even flipped one, that the Benchmade Model 42 is the best balisong ever made. The price is around $150 depending on where you go. The wait is at least a couple of months again depending on where you go since it is on backorder right now.

Many suggest the BM42 should be your first and last balisong but others say if you are just begginning and don't have that much money you can settle for some Jaguars. They are Taiwan made balisongs that cost around $20 each and are very unpredictable. Some last years, some break within the first couple of days.

I myself started with a cheapie from Louisiana and a Rostfrei from a flea market for $10. My BM42 is on its way and I can't wait!

My 42AS (I perfer lighter balis) is the best one I have as well and it is awesome; however, I didn't get into balisongs until after BM stopped making the last set so I've never handled one of the older models.

My fav' is the PC68! As a matter of fact, I like all the 3" PC, Benchmade models.

Wonder how the PC69 feels?

I own two BM Balis: a model45S and a model 35. The 35 is the smaller, of course, but is the more finely crafted model of the two. How would they rate in comparison with other models, in your opinion? Should I still try to get a BM42?

Revenant, well that depends. Are you a balisong artist? Or a collector? Well that doesn't really matter but the point is that it has really light strong titanium handles and I dunno ask Clay or Chuck...

But all I know is I've heard nothing but praise for them and they've been on backorder for months now because everybody wants one. Imagine the 45 you have but lighter and smoother.

My 42A is coming in next week so maybe I can describe it better for you then...

I'm with Sabo, I love the smaller models. I have a PC68 that is pocket smooth finish, and silk smooth flipping. They're hard to find, and kinda expensive, so I'd get a BM42. I have 2 first prod. and I love them, almost as smooth as PC, easier to find (sorta), and top of the line.

Other than Benchmade, the best Balisong Knives are made in Japan. Only problem is, because of the problem with Customs, no one is importing them right now. Also, because of some problems over in Japan, with the kids, the price on them is really high.

About 12 years ago, I use to get those knives for about $12 wholesale. Now if you wanted to get a hold of one, it may cost you as much as $60. Back then, you could have gotten a Benchmade for $60.

They make some nice hand made balisong knives in the Philippines, but the workmanship is inconsistant on those.

Next in line would be the Jaguar. The blade is made in Germany, the body in Taiwan. The German made Butterfly knives are idential to the Taiwan knives only they have a different stamp on the tang.

I like the Italian made slim butterfly, & they make a slim line in Korea but it is no wear near as nice as the Italian.

The Spanish made butterflys are pretty much over priced junk as far as I am concerned. Better just to buy the rip off China copies of them.

No one is importing butterfly from Pakinstan that I know of right now. They are not very fancy, but at least they are durable compared to China. If you get a year of of anything made in China, your doing good. With Pakinstan, they may last a life time. With American made sometimes they will last two or three lifetimes.
