What is the difference between D2 & 440C?

I have a Benchmade Griptillian drop point combo edge in 440C. I've seen posts talking about D2 steel models from Cabelas. What is the difference? Thanks.

In practical terms, D2 is harder and more wear resistant than 440C, which means it'll hold an edge longer. However, it'll be more difficult to sharpen. D2 also is only considered to be "semi-stainless", having less chromium than regular stainless steels, but more than carbon steels like M2. It'll oxidize easier than 440C if not maintained properly, but it won't rust if you look at it wrong like M2 might.

I have some Benchmade 440C and several D2 knives from other companies, Benchmade's 440C is great, but I have to admit D2 is quickly becoming a favorite steel of mine. It will be slightly more effort to keep D2 looking nice, but it's edge holding is amazing.

D2 is not necessarily harder although it can be. It usually isn't. It certainly is more wear resistant. It has more chromium than 440C but is alloyed to be a tool steel so it isn't as corrosion resistant as 440C. You would choose D2 for better toughness and edge retention and 440C for better corrosion resistance. Take care.

Benchmade lists D2 as having 11-13% chromium and 440C at 16-18% chromium. Benchmade's D2 is usually hardened higher than their 440C.
