What is the fastest opening manual folding knife?
Is it the new Kershaw Ken Onion series with the speed safe mechanism: Kershaw Ken Onion Avalanche? Or is it the Emerson Commander?

Well, if you're talking about deployment from a pocket, the Commander wins hands down.

Fred,

That was a very wise post indeed. So I will add a caveat.

If you practice, the Emerson Commander and any other Wave Opening Folder he decides to make, will indeed be the fastest, faster than even an auto, because auto's and Speed Safe's, etc., do not have the ability to open during the drawing action.

i will join the wise men before me and say
that after training with lots of knives the emerson COMMANDER is the fastest of them all. though the military by spyderco is close second.

Camillus Cuda is also in the running. With practice.IMO

In the "Tactical, Self-Defense Arena," the Emerson Commander is the zenith of the genre. It opens coming out of the pocket.

The advantage a Fixed Blade (FB) has over the folder is strength and draw speed.

When a folder is drawn, it has to be opened. The FB, obviously, is "opened" upon the draw from the sheath. The Emerson changed all of that. While you can afford the luxury of a one-step, two-step draw and opening in most instances...we are talking about "the" fastest. And this is not an opinion, I have tested this thing extensively as have others. I have an Emerson Commander Trainer which is dulled and have used it under stress and against training partners armed with other dulled knives like Spyderco Enduras...and like, "drag racing" with someone else who has a live knife. The Commander is second to none in the Defensive realm for speed of presentation.

Isn't this question entirely subjective? To try and identify one knife that is the "fastest" would be futile, since the variables of a group of individuals attempting to prove such a thing would be limitless. Size of hands, strength of wrists, motion of thumbs, just to name a few.

Besides, everyone knows that the Case Peanut is the fastest...

Not quite the right question.

The right question is "which manual folder opens first into a combat-ready position, or can do a draw-and-slash into a hanging rope the fastest?".

Answer: Sifu in a custom kydex rig, positioning the piece perfectly FOR YOU at the start of your type of draw.

This is a tie for the fastest folder rig I've ever owned, and I've owned and carried some fast rigs. It's the equal of my old AlMar Quicksilver Vs, an out-of-production 5.5" linerlock with only limited lock strength. With the Sifu's far superior lock and overall build, the old AlMars are retired with honor, one having saved a life three years ago by it's very presence. May the Sifu do as well.

Emerson Commander

When mine gets drawn, everyone's mouths drop open and the most often heard question heard is "How'd you do that?"

As has already been pointed out, the Commander actually opens on the draw. No tricky, bulky sheaths, no wrist flicking, no buttons. Just grasp, pull and POP.

Hey Guys...

It may be the fastest....

But what happens When it doesn't open ????
and at some point it Won't....

I hate to throw a wrench into the gearworks, but it can't open 100% of the time, especially under stress conditions....That's impossible..

Now I'm sure the Commander is an Excellent quality knife and everything,, but if your life is dependant upon a knife,,, Fixed Blade is the Only way to go.

Even with a fixed blade you won't get a flawless clean draw 100% of the time...

There is a Ton of things that can and will go wrong with drawing a knife, even under the best of conditions...

As it has been said before. The knife you have the most experience and confidence with will be your best knife.

I myself prefer fixed blades over anything else in my locker....What fixed blade that is changes on a daily basis...

I can open my BM 710 by twisting the knife slightly so that the thumb stud comes in contact with the seam at the top of my pants pocket and pulling the knife out. As the knife comes out of my pocket it snaps open. Like John said, when I pull my 710 people go "how did you do that;?

Yes, Jim March has it the best. That Sifu, which i have, has just a awesome big blade and lockup that would never fail in my opinion. Now where can I get that special kydex rig for mine?

Well, I don't have the answer to your question, but I would agree with the majority.... Probably the knife you practice and are the most comfortable with!

Now, that being said... I will tell you a little story. While I was at the Blade Show last month I was out on the loading dock smoking a cigarette, and I got to talking to Bub Worrell, Bob Taylor (of R.E.K.A.T.), and some other guy.... During the course of our conversation something was brought up (can't remember what exactly --- I might have asked Bob what he was carrying) anyway, he drew a REKAT Pocket Hobbit and had it in the vicinity of my head before you could blink your eye's!!! He didn't stick it in my face, but he had it at about eye level before I knew what happened! It kinda made the hair stand up on the back of my neck!!!! That, without a doubt, is the fasted I have ever seen a knife drawed...

Not only did he have it out and opened in the blink of an eye, but he had it under control and ready for business!!! I tell you what... I pity the poor fool who makes Bob feel threatened enough to pull that blade!!!

While we are speaking of Bob Taylor --- I just noticed that Mike is offering one of his instruction video's for sale... It said something about unarmed and fearless, so I don't know if there are any knife demonstration's... You folks might want to check it out! There should be a link in every forum...

What MrCas said; BM 710.

Catch the bottom thumb stud on the pocket when drawing and it comes out open.

I think that preparation and awareness is more important than the split seconds difference in deployment speed between quality folders.

Like, if you think there is a chance your knife will need to be deployed put it in your hand or hold it in your pocket in such a way that you can open it quickly.

If you are not prepared to use the knife no matter how well setup your knife is to deploy it is much less likely you will be able to draw it quickly.

If you mean fastest opening after it's allready out of the pocket, I say the 710 wins hands down. Maybe that's just me, but I've tried many knives and I've found the 710 to be the fastest.

Who really wants their folder to automatically open every time they pull it out of their pocket anyway?

What's another 1/10th of a second?

You could put nacho cheese sauce on it...

Emerson Commander for me with the least amount of practice. Jim is right though as it really needs to be which knife can be deployed to a usable position first. I can get the Commander to just about any position I want. If I was Emerson though I would make several improvements. One would be a small indent to facilitate grip changes faster. This grip feature will be on the new Gunting coming soon from Spyderco and Bram Frank.

Now speaking of Spyderco, Sal Glesser stomps some serious ass with a Military. At the Vegas Guild show a couple of years ago I asked if Spyderco would ever make a auto. He quickly deployed his Military in less than the blick of an eye and then simple asked "Why?". Damn good answer Sal
