Looked it up on the internet, just cant find the name. tried making some out of cotton and clear epoxy. That failed miserably. Rather than buying some fiberglass resin and doing it the right way, i would like to just buy a material made for it. but i honestly just have no idea what its called.

thanks

It's usually called a spacer or liner and a good DIY trick is to use the thick plastic bit of a CD or DVD case. Hope that helped.

I think you are referring to spacer or liner material. You can get a catalog from Jantz Knife Supply or look online and also check out Texas Knifemakers supply. They both sell several types and colors of spacers and liners. You can see their catalogs online and see some photos of the products. I epoxy them sometimes to my scales before I profile them to epoxy to the tang. I hope this helps. Larry

Liners, as said above. Thin metals and G10 are far and away the best, most stable materials for that application. Various scrap plastics may or may not bond with epoxy, and vulcanized fiber is almost guaranteed to shrink/swell with changes in moisture.

Good liners add pennies to the material cost of making a knife. Don't be a cheapskate ;)

Anyone ever used titanium? That might look pretty cool anodized different colors, but the durability (of the ano) might be an issue I guess.

Spacer or liner like other people said that can be made out of the same thing as any handle material. Two contrasting colors that go well together is the best bet or liners that accent another part of the knife.

Usually referred to as spacer material, many types are available, the most common is the 'fiber' which can be layered to form different thicknesses and color combinations. http://www.knifemaking.com (JANTZ SUPPLY) has several colors available in sheets that can be easily cut. This also acts as a cushion to even out the space between the handle material and knife tang. Other materials are thin layer of G-10 or micarta. Another material used is the plastic used to engrave name plates. Jantz does not currently sell this, you can probably get locally at an engraving store, they sometimes give away scraps.
