What is the purpose of the daisy chain on Kelty packs?

I've got a couple Kelty packs that all have an ice axe loop and a daisy chain. I've never used the ice axe loop for anything. I use the daisy chain to keep biners on and, from time to time, will hang things from it.

Is there a true function of this daisy chain on a backpack that I'm missing?

It started as a feature on Mountain climbers packs so they could access their gear while hanging from ropes.

I work in a camping shop and I tell customers that daisy chains are things that some pack manufacturers put on their packs so they look more impressive than the compitition they are also excellent to attach gear that you don't want anymore.
Sure they have applications for climbing but outside of that they look cool to those who don't know any better.
Or is that a bit militant?

Yeah, that's a bit militant. They are a sort of old civilian equivalent to the MOLLE ladders on current gear, attachment points.

i was think thinking that was the main reason as well.

Thanks for all the responses fellas!

I use them to dry clothes as I hike. My Osprey pack didn't come with them - so I installed them.

I never like it when a sales person attempts to talk me out of a piece of kit or an accessory based on what they think about it.

I have seen them used to secure all types of soft goods and dry clothes in the past. I think that is what should be stated to customers - THEN you can say 'I, personally, don't use them and think you may loose your gear if not careful, I fear other companies put them on their packs to look cool.'

Then it is your opinion on and not limiting the uninformed customer to what you think of the product only.

I'd like to see two vertical rows of daisy chains on all civilian bacpacks. Very useful for many things.

They can probably be useful but I'm not used to them so never use them.
Also they do seem a bit heavy for what they are and complicated to use.

I did like old packs with long top down straps but they are getting less common.

LOL, I've always seen them as APLS loops put on in the wrong direction.

I.E. to give you PALS loops whilst pathologically avoiding looking anything like military.
