It is called a Fleem (Fleam?),it was used to bleed,or drain an abcess on an animal. They also made versions for humans, you place the point on the spot to be pierced, then whacked the back of the blade.wasn't medical science wonderful?
Mike and Dave are correct.
Hear is a pic of a horseman's knife made by Richard Rogers.
This knife won best folder and best of show at the 2000 Blade Show.
Hi Dan! The reason there are three "blade" sizes on your fleam is so you could use the right size for the right animal. A small animal, a lamb for instance, would get the smaller blade while a horse would get the bigger blade. Most fleams had two or three blades. Levine's Guide to Knives, 4th. ed. has a section on fleams and he says that the sharp point was held on the animal's nose and the back of the blade was hit with a stick!
Here's a web site devoted to fleams and other bloody medical instruments: http://www.medicalantiques.com/medical/Scarifications_and_Bleeder_Medical_Antiques.htm
