what is wrong with my gatco diamond hones?

i got a gatco diamond rod sharpeing system and some of the hones have big "glops" of diamond material that are up and above the rest of the surface. i assume that this will impact the hones ability to render a good edge. any suggestions on how to remove these or just use it as is??

also what is generally prefered a gatco rod system or the lansky crock sticks? i have both...
