Looking to find something for around 20 dollars that's fairly bright and smallish (no larger than a BM Griptilian in pocket).

Fenix E12 or Xeno E03 (a little more money; but might be worth it if the option of improved performance appeals to you)

My vote would also go for the Fenix E12 only because it's the only aa light I own.

Like the OP, I'm keen to hear of the other options out there.

I just picked up a single AA 4Sevens Atom with reflector for $18.60 shipped. Lots of stuff on clearance on their site.

If you can swing $40 you can pick up a Ti Eagletac D25a 2014 version from illumn. It's my absolute favorite flashlight in any configuration. Well worth the money.

If you'd like a pocket clip for the E12, the clip from the LD09 works perfectly as long as you don't mind the clip extending past the flashlight. I actually like the deep carry. If you call the Fenix store, you can order the clip for about $6 shipped, I believe.

Mini maglite pro is only $25 and rocks. I edc'd one for a year or so before I switched to an olight i3e. If you can dig a AAA light, the olight is amazing at 90 lumens and is barely bigger than a AA battery. The $12 price tag is icing on the cake.

It's out of your listed price range, but I got a Thrunite Neutron a while back, and really like it. It has an extender tube so you can use it with either 1xAA or 2xAA. I don't know of any other flashlight in this class that can get so many lumens out of a couple AA's. 800 lumens with 2xAA, or 400 with one.

The single AAA Microstream is my number one choice. I like the single brightness and the push button rather than the twist on that is so common. Add the 10440 battery and it is incredibly bright, definitely bright enough for tactical use with a handgun.

When I'm not carrying a Streamlight you'll find a Maratac AAA in my pocket. I cannot imagine a smaller, lighter and more capable light. I keep one of these in my travel bag as a back up.

Dagnabbit. That model was not available when I was searching for a AAA light. I ended up with a Thrunite Ti3, which is pretty awesome too, but the latest & greatest Maratac lasts twice as long for the same lumens. I guess if I lose or break my Thrunite, I know what I'll replace it with.

My go to AA and AAA flashlights are both Maratac and the AAA ones get the most use.
