What is your favorite high grit sandpaper for wood/ivory?

I need to buy some sandpaper for wood or bone and ivory in higher grits that what you can find at the local store. That means 600 up to something like 2500. But not all sandpaper is good because it stains the lighter woods and bone.

What brand of sandpaper do you use that doesn't stain the material being sanded?

Thanks

Rhynowet redline won't stain wood at higher grits like some black silicone carbide paper. Really lasts a long time before clogging for high grit stuff too. I have it all the way up to 2500

I thought I remembered Rhynowet staining the "Bovine Ivory" the last time I tried. I will give it a try before I buy another kind.
Thanks!

Pat I use the Rynowet on ivory and mammoth tooth as well as different metals without the natural materials picking up colour. I haven't tried it on bone . Frank

Frank, bone should be the same. I'll give it a try, thanks.

Dan, can I ask what you consider to be real high grit?

You do have to be careful though. Sometimes sanding over pins while sanding certain handle materials can stain it no matter what paper you use. :/

It's a little hard to say. The Micromesh number go to 12000 but, like so many others, their numbering
system isn't standard...

Try the 3M polishing papers. I have 600, 1200, 4000 and 6000 that I get from Jantz. I have the Micromesh too and find I prefer the polishing papers. Just finished using them on mammoth ivory, tooth, ironwood cocobolo and 3 other different rosewoods. No staining and I've used them to clean staining off of stag and sheephorn.

Thanks for the tips and recommendations guys. I'll pick up some of both Micromesh and 3M to give it a try.

Micromesh pads are great, but i also use Alpha Abrasives papers up to 12,000 grit. Its actually made in Canada, so i dont know if you have it listed as the same brand as we do here, but it should be available up there.

I'll look for it Xander.

Nick, I'll order some of that. I remember now you talking about this before. The only hard thing will be not ordering other stuff from Rio Grande. :( ;)

Thanks guys.

It's almost as if should they stop making Rhynowet Redline paper, I'll have to stop making knives- I use it for everything, no complaints.

Not sure how it would work on bone or ivory but I use micro abrasives from Lee Valley for sharpening and polishing. They go up to .5 micron.
