I am very taken with push daggers, they are in my opinion highly efficient self-defense knives.

A push dagger has the advantage of a fixed blade (no lock problems, low weight and more stability) and is approximately compact as a folder.
The T-handle guarantees a safe grip and enables a higher push power (because the whole arm absorbs the occuring energies).
A push dagger is IMHO, contrary to commonly opinion, (depending on the shape of the blade, e. g. Cold Steel Safe Keeper 2) a useable slasher.

What is your opinion about push daggers?

I like them, but if i get caught carrying one, i'm screwed. That's spelt P*R*I*S*O*N.

From what i've read in previous threads, they're illegal to carry in most US states, even more so if they're double edged (then they fit the dirk/dagger laws also).

Cool to have, dangerous to carry, imo...

I agree with James. Great concept and very cool. Very hard to explain away as ordinary pocket or utility knife.

The first knife was probably used to cut stuff.

Push daggers have one, and only one virtue as opposed to normal knives. That is that if you are a grappler, you can use your hands to grab without putting your weapon down.

I have two push knives (single edged). Both are very well made and sharp. They look great but are uncomfortable to grip. Even the best ones I have ever held are a little awkward. Very hard to put any force behind when cutting. Really only effective to punch with.

I like them but they are not legal to carry in the state of VA

!!!!!

As you can see I really like push daggers. They aren't obviously you're everyday user/utility carry type of knives but for what they were designed for they are outstanding.

I currently own 2 CS Safekeeper II's. This push dagger is, IMHO, the absolute finest production push dagger that I'm aware exists.
I have recently seen that Al Mar Knives is also producing a push dagger. I'm not aware if this is an old design or something that they have recently introduced. Either way, I like the look of it alot.

It's a shame that push daggers are illegal to carry almost everywhere these days because for those looking for a little personal defense this would surely be a good addition to a personal arsenal.

Now for military use, the push dagger (CS SKII) would definately find it's way onto my gear.

Push Daggers are also harder for someone to knock out of your hand, as far a I know. I think that they would be an ideal defence knife for those with little training. You just hang on, slash wildly and punch to your heart's content.

If they were legal here, I'd be getting one for my girlfriend immediately.

I had, for a period of time, as my EDC a Cold Steel Terminator. I think they are called Safekeepers now; something like that. I was unaware of their controversy. They are probably legal in my state. It is a good knife, but the Kraton handle is loose around the tang.

I like push daggers, but they are illegal up here in Canada. I wouldn't mind having one, since I'm really tactile oriented and the feel of that type of blade in the hand is nice

I can't say that I'd carry or use it much though, legality notwithstanding.

However, I personally feel that a piece like the Perrin/Emerson La Griffe provides the main advantage of the push dagger (retention) without the legal issues, in addition to being useful for general cutting as well. Fred makes larger Griffes, I wonder if he could be persuaded to do a nice pointy double-edged one?

I agree, pushdaggers would be a great knife for strictly combat/self defense purposes. But, since most(if not all) states outlaw them, I am not going to carry one and end up in a "pound me in the ass prison".

I like Cold Steel's push daggers, but Cold Steel ain't gonna bail me out of jail if I get caught carrying one. Therefore, I won't even bother with one.

AJ Collins makes really cool push daggers with wicked blade shapes and comfortable grips. I don't know how practical push daggers are, but they're fun!

In germany push daggers are still permitted but the legislator is very strived to change that. I quite agree with Raptor, the increasing ban by law is really a shame!

The Safe Keeper 2 by Cold Steel is certainly one of the best push daggers available at present, but as Jeff Manney criticized, the handle is somewhat unstable, a stiffer handle and this push dagger would be perfect.

yitz: Is there a link concerning the knives of A. J. Collins?

Many thanks for your opinions!

Horus: I don't know. He doesn't strike me as a computer kind of guy. Also goes under "KKK" knives. Besides having a unique look, he also does cool things such as have the grind twist around or take a thick piece of steel and grind out the middle so there is a double blade.

Hi.
I'm new to this forum and its fantastic.
I also think push daggers are fantastic, although I would never carry one around with me.
I also have a weapon called a Katar, which is likely the push daggers great great grand daddy.
It's almost like a "push short sword."
I can't recall for sure, but I was either told or I read somewhere that gamblers in the "Old West" favored push daggers

Hello

I have used a push dagger - a handmade IMK one with brass little bolsters and a wood handle - for some three years and when I stopped using it I could do most everything with its little double edged blade. i would even use it to make the packages I send the knives in.
I retired it in favor of folders - really can't recall why, I think I wanted to try something different - but I still have it and use it now and then.
Push daggers are very quick and effective, besides being a bit more scary.
