I am going to try my hand at making a knife. An edger blade seems to be a good tough metal. It's constantly banging into sidewalk concrete and still he's a decent edge and doesent chip to bad. I want to mak a good size camp knife for chopping wood , battoning ect. Thanks

We mostly deal with known steel. The only way you'll be able to find out is by having one tested or email the company and ask. Our collective advice will always be buy known steel. several good places to buy from right here on the forum. Your local fastenal will be able to provide you with high carbon tool steel as well. (O1/A2, or if your into pounding they also carry W1 in rounds, which is the tool steel grade of 1095:D) Read the stickies, then reread them and then read them some more, every time I read them, I learn something... and I've read through them a few times

Far far away there is a place that some folks enjoy making things out of other old things, But you wont find that here.
5' of 3/16" x 1 1/2" steel (1075/1080) from admiral steel is only $16.16 plus shipping.http://www.admiralsteel.com/shop/
There are also some good deals on steel in the supplies forum.
The sticks at the top are the first resource. The second resource would be to get Wayne Goddards book, "the $50.00 knife shop"
And If you still want to make things out of old junk try this sight.

Most likely it's made of cheap crap that is no good for knife making. I know you don't want to hear that, but it's true. Good for practicing on for sure, but don't expect a knife that will function worth a crap.

It is probably similar to LMBS ( lawn mower blade steel).;)
Just having fun.:D

Seriously, it is hard to say what it is. Most likely it isn't a good blade steel. You can spend the time to quench test it, but still won't know what it is. Best plan is to get some known steel and start with that.

I have tested alot of them and none ever worked out. I went as far as quenching in cold water, still didnt pan out for me. But with that being said they where great to practise on. The hole in the middle of the stick would have been great for a finger groove, Hope this helps some,Charlie
