What knives do our Marines carry today? I know from my limited knowledge of knives that it was the Ka-Bar #1217. Right? Do they still carry those?

Many soldiers in the Marines and in the Army will have a M9 Bayonet made by Buck Knives with them.

Some basic info on it:

Bowie-style clip point, fuller on right hand side, rounded retangular through hole rather close to the point, black oxide finish optional, steel (alloy N/A) tempered to 56-58 HRC, circular cross-section xytel handle, muzzle ring in the guard, pommel fitting mates with the M-16A2 bayonet lug.

Overall length: 12 1/4"
Blade length: 7 1/8"
Weight: 14 oz

The issue cordura and plastic sheath comes with a sharpening stone and a mechanism that mates with the hole in the blade to form a wire-cutter.

Scroll down to the section on WWII knives, and read about the 5684 7" Blade. This will answer your question....

The only "official" knife for the Marine Corps is the M9 Bayonet. As I remember there were some Ontario K-BAR's in the system (I recieved an inscribed one as an award). So, in my experience/opinion the answer is going to be: whatever they want.

Now to further cloud the issue, some commands (yes, in the grunts)would prohibit the carry of large bladed personal knives. If you owned any, they were "supposed" to be kept in the armory and not in the barracks. Mucho BS, I know.

As far as what is standard for a Marine infantryman to carry would be:

1.) Gerber multiplier, Leatherman, etc.

2.) Tactical folder

3.) K-Bar, or other large fixed blade.

It all depends on the individual. I used to carry a Gerber tool, then either a Benchmade CQC-7 or Balisong, and sometimes a Gerber Guardian II or a CRKT Sealtac. When I was in Cuba, we had latitude, my Marines carried everything from Cold Steel Vietnam Tomohawks, to machetes, to basic lock back folders.

So, to finally answer your question; nothing and everything.

I have never seen the M9 issued while in the Marines.
The M7 bayonet is issued to everyone with the M16, while the K-Bar is issued to everyone that has the M-9 Beretta.

Here's one old Marine's reflections on USMC knives, slightly off topic. When I was in Vietnam, many of us carried K-Bars. These were typically made by Camillus, not K-Bar. I was never issued one (I'm not sure how you got issued one), but I somehow acquired one, as did many of us. The M-16 bayonet was issued to everyone, and frankly made the K-Bar unnecessary, though the K-Bar was much sexier.

By the way, GrantP, Marines are never called "soldiers." I intend no disrespect to members of the U.S. Army, but Marines are called Marines, with or without the capital "M." As fewer and fewer members of society serve in the armed forces, these customs are unfortunately being lost.

Best,
BA

I know my brother was in the Marines and was issued a Ka-Bar and carried it during his tour in Vietnam back in the late 60s. I don't know who made it.

My only experience with Marines is Charlie Company, 4th Tank Battalion, USMCR, here in Idaho (their building is next to my HQ -- before I retired). They have the M9 bayonet "and" the fighting/utility for issue to each member of the company.
