Just curious, my mother-in-law has some and they're the worst kitchen knives I've ever used(well maybe not if they were new and sharp but that was far from the case.)

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

You know you see ads where they say that their knives, usually kitchen, don't ever need sharpening and are warranted for life. I have yet to see one of "those" knives that didn't need sharpening and most are pure, worthless junk.

Why would a serrated piece of glorified tin ever need to be sharpened? If you saw hard enough you will be able to saw through the tin can as on TV. Doesn't that prove it's sharp?

What they meant to say was, "If you're dumb enough to buy one of these, you will never wise up and notice we lied to you".

What they ment was you will never sharpen them. By the time they need to be sharpened you have usually thrown them out and gotten something else. Maybe not better though.

It's a fine line between "a hobby" and "mental illness".

I'm embarrased to say I bought knives like the ginsu for the kitchen a few years back. They are big pieces of S***!They work terrible and I don't even think I can try to sharpen those cheesey tin flimsy blades.I can't wait till I can afford to buy suitable replacements.Maybe even buy some kitchen knives from a custom maker.Ralph

Actually, Jeff had the idea. But I didn't mean to point a finger. Many years ago I was tempted by the commercials too. I mean, if it's on TV it must be true, right? DOH!

Ever tried to sharpen such one?
If yes: you know why they NEVER need to be resharpened: you just cannot.
(well you may "sharpen" butter, it still won't cut)
Happy sharpening

You may or may not have seen an infomercial on television for the "Sportsman's Dream" collection of knives. Shopping at "BJ's Wholesale Club" the other day, I picked up a set (they were cheap, and they were knives, and I am weak).

Among the claims on the box were "never needs resharpening," and "stainless steel blades never rust." The knives are manufactured in China.

Was I taken by these baseless claims? No; I like to buy cheap knives from time to time, if only to sooth my knife-o-mania at a discount. But what amazed me was that this company can market its product with such shameless fiction -- fiction that will lead to disappointed, knife-ignorant consumers, who won't be able to understand why their new miracle knives get duller with each use and insist on rusting when they're not looking.

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

Back to topic, if you put deep enough serrations on a knife, it'll keep ripping through stuff for a helluva long time (even if it isn't technically "cutting").
