what makes the kris dagger so good

wouldnt it be better to fill in the gaps between the wave patterns?

How about you try cutting various materials and find out for yourself? :)

A kris is basically a recurved blade repeated a number of times.
You'll either like how it cuts things, or complain about sharpening it.

Don't worry, someone will come along soon to spread the hate of all baldes that aren't straight. :D

Then someone else will come along and talk about the curves making for more cutting surface.

Waves, more powerful magic.

Not all kris are wavy. Most older ones are more straight.

Better schmetter.
Although I don't own one (just don't want to even try to sharpen it) IMHO the wavy kris style is one of the absolute COOLEST looking blade designs ever.

At least you have gotten over the "advantages and disadvantages" stuff.

Unfortunately, this one isn't really working either. I'll ask you a question and maybe you'll see why...

Wouldn't it be better to fill the hole in a donut or bagel with dough?

Kris designs were meant for stabbing, the wave added width to the wound without adding mass to the blade. It's a fighting knife.

It's a peculiar pistol grip stabber.
The waves were to snag and pull out guts
In a twisting motion.
the edges btw, are not exactly sharp.

I don't think he's gotten over it, most likely taking a break......

This is basically the same as "Kris Dagger: advantages and disadvantages"

IDK why this continues, but instead of feeding the troll, I am going to hit the ignore list button...

I can understand how this drives you crazy, but I suggest you do the same (Ignore list)

I'm sure our new friend is just looking for the ultimate self defense EDC.

He should just get what he thinks looks awesomest. It'll make him happy and it will be just as (in)effective as anything else.

And if I put people on Ignore, what fun would I have?!?

Bahahaha!!

I can't argue missing out on the "fun" part!!

The issue here is, moderation is sometimes difficult to figure out, in terms of who is being the Troll. Even when it seems rather obvious...that ends any potential "fun" with threads like this for me.

I completely understand their point of view, just because:

A: They need to keep this forum from turning into a mess.

B: What is a Troll to me MAY not be a Troll to you/them.

As a side note, it's unfortunate that the ignore list still allows me to see this thread!

The "wave" may disrupt an opponent's weapon during a parry, a number of European weapons have a similar blade shape for this reason. It could have some religious symbolism none of us are aware of, it could also be one smith back in time made one and it just became a "trend". I've owned kris-style blades before but never had to sharpen them because I never used them, many other blade styles are more utilitarian and thus more suitable for EDC, and just try explaining "self-defense" to a jury once they get a look at an EDC kris- the DA would tear you apart. In my opinion it's an antiquated style suitable for collecting and not much else, although it does have a beauty to it.

Marcinek: you need a reverse ignore list on which you can put all the dopes, trolls, etc. so their posts pop up for your amusement. You can then decide if you wish to play with them (like a cat with a mouse) :D

Q: Wouldn't the Spyderco Civilian be better as a plain edged drop point without the recurves?

A1: No.
A2: Then it wouldn't be a Spyderco Civilian.

Now, now! I never said our new friend is as dope, troll, etc! He's just expecting a kniufe to do more than it does.

The right steel or blade shape will not turn one into a self defense expert, just like it won't turn someone into a "survival" expert.

Just like someone with a skill set and no knife (like that hiker with the broken leg last week) is going to outlive you and your survival knife, someone with a good set of running shoes and situational awareness is going to outlive you and your super steel butterfly kris out on the street.

I was under the impression that the main point of a kris blade shape is to create an irregular wound that is difficult to close and bleeds profusely. A stab and twist would create a pretty damning injury.

I'll leave it up to the mall ninjas to debate the best blade shape for the purpose of totally killing dudes. Us adults will just go back to bickering over blade steels and opening/locking mechanisms with unjustified levels of intensity and condescension.

Idk why we'd do that. A folding kris in 440a with an aluminum detent slip joint on Teflon bearings is clearly the ultimate tool AND weapon.

^^^ This, they are a rib tickler, you don't do much cutting with them. :)

The history behind the knife and reasons for its shape, both practical and spiritual, are all very easy to find with just a moments searching of the internet.....SEA weapons and martial arts are very interesting.

In a cut a flamberge blade will also create a concentration of the applied force to the peaks of the waves, which can assist with getting through clothing, etc. A cut against a surface covered in fabric often increases the area of contact, spreading the force of the blow out and reducing the ability of the blade to make the cut.
