So I know I've seen on BF multiple times where pinetar was wanted/used for something and I was in my local Ace Hardware yesterday and they had cans of pinetar on clearance ($2.99 for a pint-ish sized can) so I grabbed one. Why? No clue, sounded like the right thing to do at the time... So now I have a can of pinetar and no friggin clue what I should be doing with it. I figured worst case scenario I can use it in fire kits with my Boy Scouts...

Anyway, what do you guys use pinetar for?

If you're using it for anything applied to your skin, make sure it doesn't have any toxic additives added to it.

I make up a canvas waterproofing recipe. It works great on any cloth packs or tarps even my oilcloth coats and hats.
Uses pine tar, bees wax, real turpentine, orange oil and linseed oil(not Boiled)
Little pricey to make up but you make gallon at a time.Way cheaper than the little tins that the waterproofing is in.Works better IMO

i used to use it on my Louisville slugger. it was for grip. I also used it for sealing wood.

I use it to irritate myself when I'm in the woods with no way to clean it off the hairiest parts om my arms and legs.

Thanks for the responses guys. Somebody emailed me about wood finishing with 1:1:1 boiled linseed, pine tar and turpentine... Anybody else tried this? Sounds interesting. What kind of finish does it create, anything similar to compare it to?

When I was a kid we raised hogs.. After castrating a pig we would slap pinetar over the wound to help keep it clean, and keep the flies out. Worked like a charm..

grab a stout stick, wrap one end with thin wire, and coat with pinetar. Cover with dry grass and then more pine tar until its got a good 1 - 2" blob on on it.

wilderness torch.

Yep, I use a 40-40-20 mix of (real)turpentine, linseed oil, and pine tar, respectively, as a finish on my wood knife handles. I think I'm gonna try and use tung oil instead of linseed oil next time.

I also use a beeswax, pine tar, neatsfoot oil mix to finish and seal my leather sheaths, boots, quivers, etc.

Its also used as a hoof dressing on horses to toughen up the hoof, keep in moisture, promote growth, to clean hooves, etc...

How do you remove it? My lab has two spots on his head that have pine tar on it he must of been rooting around in the woods. Been waiting for it to wear off but its been a week and its still there.

Works well for making quick small leak repairs to the canoe while on the go. Just scrape some good sticky stuff from the tree's leakage, and dab it on the hull.
