What's going on with the Goddard Line?

I heard a rumor (actually read) that Spyderco may be discontinuing some of the Wayne Goddard Models. Is it true?

I'm not sure about the entire story, but I think the micarta-handled full-size Goddard and the mid-size micarta Goddard Jr. are history, but the full-size lightweight will be around still. Don't know about the micarta Baby Goddard. This is what I've heard, hope it helps! Sal?

Danka Savman. I have been procrastinating on getting the entire set, I had better get on the stick.

Savman is correct, thanx. The baby Goddard is also gone when current inventory is gone.

We are keeping the lite weight in combination edge. We made a batch of Plain edge lite weights. They wsent very quickly. Waiting on results now. If demand requires, we will add the plain edge version of the lite weight.

Well, I'm glad I have my Goddards, then. Maybe I'm crazy Sal, but I always wanted one in G-10!!! I know the design has a blend of elegance to its utilitarian ways, but I always wanted the ultimate "utility Goddard", and it would be a G-10 handle variant! Is there any hope? Hehe.

Chad

Chad - Wayne goddard never mentioned G-10?? He designed the knife for Micarta. I guess if we have enough demand, we could make a G-10 version. same blade, lock & spring holder.

Mr. Glesser

I will buy one in G-10! Anyone reading this topic needs to go out and at least look at the micarta Goddards, they are great. The Goddard Jr. micarta is my favorite spydie, and I bought it from Savman. Hate to see these go, if you like spydies you owe it to yourself to pick one of these up before they are gone. I am going to pick up another Jr. so I will have an extra.

Oh yeah, just picked up a mini Dyad, excellent workmanship, superb little knife, I reccomend it.

Sal, like they said a G-10 would be great. Also with a plain edge version in ATS steel would be cool.

I have the lite wt. Goddard, C16 and without a doubt the BEST deal out there right now irregardless of the type of lock up anyone is talking about. The lockup on this model at least mine anyways is stronger than my CS Voyager. I also judge other knives sharpness by this particular knife. G10, I don't know. Pretty much happy with mine the way it is. Although a plain edged blade would be nice. Keep up the good work! Keep'em sharp

I agree with longbow. I would like to see the Goddard LW in a straight edge also. I personally find them more convienent to maintain.
I don't agree with the G-10 argument. The micarta scales just compliment the knife too well. Even when compared to the superb LW the Micarta models make the LW look like a bit of a dog.

With a nice texture a la BF Native, with an optional tip up/ down carry choice and a plain edge, I would literally order a dozen. When Nakano speaks, his club members and associates listen! Thanks EF Hutton.

Ah yes, EF Hutton is our man...I'm hearing you, Kin! A nicely textured G-10 Goddard in ATS55 or CPM440V, with a plain edge of course, and drilled on both ends to satisfy everyone. I may have to order a dozen, too. Aflatfoot, there are a few plain edge LW's around, but they're hard to find. Maybe Sal will brew up some more for us?? I'd have to agree with the above, the LW is quite the cutlery bargain, but the micarta versions are just SO NICE! The thing that attracted me to the Goddard design the most was the awesome slide-down protection the handle design gives. I really like that in a knife, as it makes me feel more comfortable using the knife aggressively. But, micarta can be "slippery when wet", so that's where G-10 comes in. All that built-in slide down protection and a nice impervious/grippy G-10 handle...whoa! Almost the perfect knife! Oh, Sal?

Sal, perhaps all of this love for the Goddard line may change your mind in regards to discontinuing some of the models.

I have a full size Goddard and I absolutely love it! I like the slim micarta handle, the Gin-1 steel, the way the clip is mounted on the handle for low visibility in the pocket, ergonomics, and just the overall look of this knife. I currently own 7 Spydies, and except for the Military, this is my favorite. I never see much written on the Forum about it.

I bought one of the plain-edged Goddard Lightweights a few weeks ago. It has become my favorite primary daily carry knife (the one I will have with me, regardless of what's in my other pockets). I'll probably buy more of these, if they're still available. In addition to the protection offered by the lower handle flair, I like the way said flair positions the knife in my hand so the lock release sits exactly where I want it: directly beneath the hollow where my thumb joins the palm. The Goddard is slightly better than the Endura in this respect, although the Endura has some pleasing nuances that make me vacilate from time to time. I don't think I'll be depressing the spring inadvertently on the Goddard. Of course I also love the blade shape, and the minimized hump is nice when choking up on the handle, yet still very easy to open.

So if you're counting votes, count me as one in favor of making the plain-edged Goddard Lightweight a regular item. What SKU would I vote to get rid of in order to make room for it? The combo-edge Goddard light-weight, of course!

Well, if I can't have a G-10 Goddard, there's one variation that would be very easy to make and ranks up there as a top-priority Goddard request...a micarta Goddard Jr. with a PLAIN edge! The Goddard Jr. is one of my ultimate favorites, regardless of price, in its size category. If I could change one thing about it, I would make it a plain edge. I just don't like combos on small blades. Could you do a small run of these, Sal? You can count me in for AT LEAST a few of them!

Let's float this back to the top for the Goddard lovers. I'm hoping Sal will contribute more!

Chad - Sory, can't do too much more at this time. Models for Y2K have already been selected. We'll probably post theose on
Tuesday after confering with Michelle (Who is snowed right now with the Y2K prep).

Models for which we are already tooled are easier to make again or make variations of. It depends primarily on demand. We put out a batch of Plain edge FRN Goddards and we're waiting to see if the demand follows.

Phylis Goddard had a batch of plain edge micarta Goddard Jrs. I don't know current status.

Well keep watching & listening. Thanx for the input.
sal

No prob, Sal. Everyone will be interested in the Y2K list, when available. Do you have contact info for Phylis Goddard? BTW, I bought a few of the plain-edge LtWt. Goddards. Awesome lightweight knife!

Thanks,
Chad

Sal, build it in G10 & they will buy...my Goddards (full size & Jr.) are my absolute most favorite daily carry blades. Nothing else even comes close for that unique blend of utility, beauty, style, carry comfort, & defensive capability. Sorry to see that you've dropped the micarta line. Guranteed sale, though if you build it in G10!
