What's So Great About Walter Brend?

I'll admit that I am new to the knife collecting world.

I am specifically curious why a knife that was "hand rubbed" by Brend is worth so much more?

Isn't a mirror polish the same done by hand or machine?

Or how about a hand rubbed polish by worker "x"?

Brend is not the only maker with high prices. There are many knives that go for that same price range. He has good designs and uses excellent steels, and his knives are known for being tough. What else can you say? Besides, the final choice is the buyer and if you think the price is high then you don't have to buy his knife.

People will pay for quality. Brend doesn't just "hand rub" the blades, he designs them and hollow grinds them by hand. He is a world class maker and his works shows why, perfect grinds everytime. If you think its easy, give it a try yourself. As far as machine VS hand work, you pay extra for anything made by hand, time costs money. If you think his prices are high, check Michael Walker or Buster Warrenski--would love to have one of his big daggers, they are awesome! Until you see one in person, you just don't understand.

I think I was wondering why some blades were said to be "hand rubbed" by him.
They did not specify that he ground them as well.
If they say that he hand rubbed them does that automatically mean that he hand ground them too? I can then appreciate the price differences...

Thanks

Yes Joe. If it says that Brend put a handrubbed finish on them, then he ground them also. Different makers are known for different talents, and Brend is definitely known for his sweeping grind lines.

Normark beat me to it. He makes very nicely finished knives using high quality steel while employing very complexed grinds. His work is so clean that it may be hard to appreciate in a photo, but if you get a chance to look over one of his knives at a show you will see the complexity of the blade grinds. Very nice knife; but, expensive for a using knife.

The best way to understand is to pick up one of Walter's knives and study it closely. Then you will understand.
