What's the best fixed blade Tanto?

I'm looking for a fixed blade tanto for general purpose. I really like the looks of the Ka-Bar and I think that the short and full size would make a great looking set.

However, from my limited searching, it appears that these Ka-Bars aren't highly regarded. My other choice is a Cold Steel Recon Tanto, however the handle looks like a kitchen knife to me (although this seems to be the trend in fixed blades). Now the Cold Steel Japanese series is NICE but they start at $239 and I'd like to keep it around 100.

So, for looks, Ka-Bar has it; for function, Cold Steel. Any other suggestions?

i might would get one of the cold steel tantos, cold steel fixed blades are really pretty good for the $$, a spyderco lum tanto would be my #1 choice though, for a small carry FB the MOD razorback is ok too.

i think the lum would be the best choice because its got a pretty conventional grind vs a chisel grind like some tantos have, also ya know if its a spydie F&F will be pretty darned good.

there arent as many tantos around now vs a few yrs back, esp FB tantos imho.

I don't think it's real popular, but I like the Buck/Strider collaboration fixed blade with the tanto profile (model 890TX). The 420HC steel is heat treated by Bos which helps ensure proper treatment. It's my "car trunk knife." The 420HC isn't very glamorous, and there are certainly better steels; but it's very corrosion resistant and sharpens well.

Have you considered the Benchmade 141 Nimravus Tanto? You should be able to fine one for just a bit more than $100.

Thanks guys all nice knives but I'm really leaning toward the Benchmade. The folding tantos are nice as is the Nimravas.

I know it's a little more then you said you wanted to spend but you said"BEST" Tanto. So take a gander at this:

Ron...The guy said that he was looking to keep it around $100, not $1000.:D.

Closer to $1000?? Man, I was just about to become interested. But I can't do a grand.

Dann,
Yeah, I know, I know, but I thought it might give him something to shoot for in the future! And the CRK Tanto1 isn't $1000 either....far from it:o

Don't pay any attention to what Glockman99 said about the price....he is way off.

True, glockman99 did obviously exaggerate a bit, but even at the CRK's actual price point, can one honestly argue that it performs 4x as well as the Benchmade, or 8x as well as a Ka-Bar? As with other knives in this range, the theory of diminishing returns enters into effect, and while the additional cost can be justified for certain individuals, that isn't the case for everyone.

Yes, I know that they can be bought for about 1/2 (or less) of that $1000, but it's still ALOT of money for ONE knife....And as mentioned, I don't see where that CR Tanto is worth THAT much more $ than a Benchmade Nimravus or even one of the "new-style" stainless 6" Cold Steel Tanto that I sometimes carry.

Another vote for the BM Tanto, really good knife. Out of Cold Steel and Kabar (tantos) I'd go with Kabar but I'd definately check out the Benchmade.
