What's the hoopla over flashlights and what's wrong with a good ol' plain Maglite?

Yet another dangerous addiction!

The AA Minimag conversion mentioned gives a very useful level of light for camping - plenty to see one's way when walking around in woods. The batteries seem to last at least ten times as long -- ten hours so far with no reduction sharp enough to detect. The light is very white compared to the original bulbs.

No comparison on durability. Idgit cat knocked it off the bench 3 ft. to concrete floor. Still OK. Idgit Tom put it back on the bench so cat could do it again. Still works fine. That would NEVER have happened with the original bulb.

'Course, the rubber tubing makes it easier to hold in the mouth when I don't have a headlamp or winter gear makes a headlamp impractical.

I have the AAA (.5 watt), AA (1 watt), and CC (1.5 watt) River Rocks. Perhaps too concentrated for all-round use, but impressive "throw." Especially the CC as noted. Got mine in February on sale at Target.

Greater output may not be needed and generally reduces battery life.
