I can see the appeal of high end knives have recently purchased my first one (SMF). the only problem with these knives is i cant really see myself actually getting much use out of them, i would constantly be thinking about damaging it in any and wouldn't really be able to use it for its fully intended purpose. what do you guys think? what are some of the more expensive knives that you own that you actually use?
sorry if this has been done before

It has been my experience that the majority of people who possess them...use them. This has long been discussed, safe queen vs. user. For some, safe queens are what they collect. For others, they might buy 2 of a given knife...one user and a back up for a collection or as a user. Me? I use everything I own...XM 18/XM 24/SMF/Sebenza/Umnumzaan etc etc...that's what they were built/made for. Rick (Hinderer) & Chris (Reeve) will be the first to tell you this...along with many others such as Strider and Sal Glesser. All the knives I've mentioned are (imo) hard use knives...they aren't going to break unless you do something with them a knife isn't designed to do. Don't be skeered...they're not made of glass...use them in good health and take care of them, and they'll take care of you.

I include a Chris Reeve Ti-Lock ($475) in my EDC rotation and carry it several months at a time.

Combative Edge M1, unfornately the company doesn't have warranty for their products....Contacted them numerous times but GREAT knife and good user.

Steigerwalt custom:

My 2010 purchased CRK/Wilson Combat 'StarTac' Umnumzaan... note the 'patina' on the scales!

You bet it's a great user! I do have one potentially much more expensive knife... a custom knife Mel Pardue made for me in exchange for a benchrest rifle. It is my one exception to the 'everything gets carried' rule. It's just too nice to carry. I still drool when I fondle it. Thank goodness for Renaissance Wax!

lovin that handle spine pattern!

Me too, joey. The knife is truly a work of art and my photos don't begin to do it justice. I feel privileged to own a piece this nice. Truth is, there's no way I would have bought it on my own. I wouldn't have been able to justify its cost to myself. It's really a testament to what 37 years of marriage to a loving wife can do.

Custom Michael Raymond Estrella. Rock solid, great grippy texture, and a Damasteel blade that cuts like crazy (although I mainly open envelopes, etc.):

Randall bear bowie, next two would be Randall SGTs model and large inlaid sebbie.

The Randall bowie isn't really the most useful knife, but I'll be damned if it doesn't look cool. :D

Once you get yourself an expensive knife just use it, and you'll have a greater appreciation for it. After you get that first scratch you won't feel bad about beating on em a bit. Only live once, might as well enjoy the finer things.

Hmm, wasn't thinking of these when I listed the large sebbie. Randall 14 and 18. Randalls are my absolute favorites, great all around users(except that bowie, it might make a good kitchen knife. Should've got a 25-6 instead).

Man, that Estrella sure is a beauty. And my Steigerwalt mostly sees office duty, too. So I understand your comment about using it to open envelopes. But that still qualifies it as a user in my book! :)

I understand this completely, but think of the all the times you have eaten a meal out with someone and dropped a hundred or two hundred dollars and then crapped it out the next day. A good knife will last a lifetime and is almost a bargain in comparison.

This is very nice.

I carry a large Sebbie, a Zaan, Three Sisters Forge Beast, Jim Burke custom. All very nice; all are worker bees.

The Steigerwalt is the most expensive knife I EDC. But I'd be remiss in not pointing out that I've got a couple of Sebenzas, a couple of William Henrys, and a few customs (Olson, Davis, and Laconico) that make it into my EDC rotation. And they too are worker bees. (The William Henrys are particularly effective on envelopes! ;) )
