What's your reason for being outdoors?

What I mean by that is that so many of the gear topics, questions, and answers are based on one's specific reasons/activities for being in the outdoors.

For me, I have two general activities: hiking and fishing. At this stage of life, most hiking is day or a single overnight (frankly, I prefer sleeping in the RV or camper van at this stage of life). So when someone asks about what this or that they should get or discusses something they own, I approach the subject from being a hiker.

If I was a long distance backpacker still, I'd have different thoughts. Same if I were a hunter, practicing ancient traditional woodcraft, etc.

What are your reasons for being out there? What do you do in the outdoors?

Dayhiking & Backpacking mostly. Use to hunt, but that was before my 2 boys. Hoping to at least get back into Turkey Hunting in the coming year.

I go outdoors because I hate to be indoors.:D I hunt and fish all over the place and when I am not hunting, fishing or camping, I check around the lakes and shelter belts for walking stick material which I do as a hobby. I mostly camp from boats or the Jeep as a badly broken foot has slowed down my walking. Besides I am no spring chicken any more.:)

Hiking, although I mean this in the multiple day sense. I'm not sure if it should be called more rightly backpacking, but then, I don't always carry a backpack, and would feel rather odd using that word for it then. :D I do other things, from hunting to some climbing, and of course skiing, but hiking is the main thing. I go outdoors so I don't have to be indoors. :D

I love fishing & Camping and hiking the most...only been hunting a few times and don't mind that either....

Nowadays it's mostly day hiking and camping in the spring and summer. But I've done tons of backpacking, mountain biking, ATVing, fishing, shooting and just about whatever else can be done in the woods. I also use my dayhikes to grab up different types of wood, plants rocks etc. to try making different things too.

Hunting,Camping, Day hikes, I like exploring places i've never been to before. moving through heavy brush quietly takes practice half the fun on a hike is seeing how close I can get to the wild life without spooking it.

I love being outside. It really doesn't matter what I'm doing. I definitely don't have the experience many other forumites do in specific areas, but I could take care of myself in the woods most anywhere, as long as it wasn't really long term.

I just totally love the great outdoors - There is just something awesome about getting away from the sound that technology makes :) - I look for any opportunity I can to Walk/Hike, or Camp (although the LAtter is becoming more and more infrequent), and count it an extra blessing when I can come back with the scent of a camp fire on me

One of the things I love most about heading into the woods, is the opportunity to meditate on the Lord. - He's been real good to this ol' boy.

Much in the same vein as Barrabas. The outdoors is my place of worship; my "church" if you will, as I belong to none other.

i used to deer hunt, but ended up shooting at more deer than i killed. i put my deer rifle up last year and i will soon be hunting with a camera. Don't the outdoors just seem like heaven on earth ?

Camping, fishing, hiking. I hate the idea of a wasted day(playing video games or watching tv) I like to go outdoors when I'm stressed as well.

Relax and get as far away from wires as I can.

I love LD backpacking but my son is still too young for it. In a few years we will be going.

I do bushcraft anywhere and time I can. I try to get outside as often as I can a few days per week.

Being in the woods helps ground me and it is great exercise.

I have never camped for more then 1 night, but I am sure I could bring enough food to eat well for a week and just settle in and hike around exploring from "base camp" on all day hikes or long overnight trips. Once I see how well I could sustain myself from snaring or trapping, and yes, hunting, I would start thinking about staying out for longer periods.
My ultimate goal is to have a log cabin in a beautiful spot someplace remote and live "with" the land not off it. Will that ever happen? I hope so!
A long way from never being out more then 1 night, but working up to that point will be fun, slow and stady, gaining knowledge from you good folks.;)

i just love to get outside. i love being outdoors, in just about any kind of weather (as long as i can come in and dry off after walking around in that rain storm...)

i take every chance i get to be outside. this can mean anything from chopping wood to collecting walking stick wood to just sitting in the shade making stovewood into a pile of shavings. mostly i hike though, primarily shorter trips no longer than a few days.

For me is what most of you said ... But mostly its a place where i can be ME. All of you might laugh at it but sometimes when i go on long hard backpacking or even hiking. I see my self as part of a fantasy book where i go on an adventure. Yes i got a very vivid imagination..

Because I hate being indoors, and I get irritable after being around people too much, even the people I love sometimes.

Mostly I LOVE fishing, and because my favorite fishing lakes are hours away in the mountains, I camp out for a couple of days. I like taking day hikes closer to home as well. When I get out of school, I would like to get into backpacking, so I can get to some of the lakes and streams that I can't reach by car. I would like to get back into hunting, but right now, I really don't have the time, maybe I'll try to start that after school as well.

When younger I lived on a hobby farm with forrest on the property next to it, the guy who owned the property gave us free run of the forest as long as we didn't chop any trees down or come onto the area that was cleared around his house.
During the summer we practically lived outdoors.
Now that I am older (over 40) I mostly hunt during the fall, camp with the family during the spring and summer. At least a few times a month we go on day hikes all year round.
I work Monday to Friday and I have 1 3/4 to 2 hour commute each way so for much of the year it's dark by the time I get home so the day hikes are mostly done on the weekends
