Hey everyone . Got a question for the mechanical minded folk here . I’m in the process of building my own 2x72 grinder and looking at cheaper options for tracking and idler wheels . Unfortunately I don’t have a lot to spend on it at this stage .I was looking down the track of using skateboard wheels and then had a thought about using boat trailer rollers , the almost V shaped ones with a flat area in the middle . To me , logically having that deep groove would just about automatically keep the belt tracking well assuming all the axles are lined up reasonably well . My only concern is never having seen anyone use wheels with that sort of profile which makes me think it’s probably not that simple . I have made a hinged bracket for the main tracking wheel .
Any thoughts would be great

I built my 2x72, and used skateboard wheels for my two platen wheels, and tracking, and then a 4" mdf wheel for the drive. I crowned the tracking wheel, and it works pretty well. The MDF tracking wheel is getting pretty worn out, but it is still working. I've been wondering about the grooved wheel myself.

I've been using longboard wheels for several years now for platen wheels. You can get them 50mm wide that handle a 2" belt just fine. Be sure you look for the harder wheels, 80 to 90 duro, but even 70 duro works ok. One problem with skateboard wheels is the size of the axle -

Where I planning to use the grinder 8 hr/day 5 days/wk then I would go another route, but I don't like the solid aluminum wheels.

Triple Stripe, how do you handle the axle? Isn't the bearings about 5/16" ID?

Sorry for the delay, I never did anything about the axle, I just used them with the 5/16 ID.
