When and how to add jimping

So I am wondering when the best way to add jimping is, also should it be done before or after heat treating?

I was thinking on just cutting the jimping in using my portaband since the table has a miter gauge slot I could just set the miter gauge to 45 degree and cut them in.

Any advice on this?

I don't do jimping very often, but when I do, I do it before HT. I use needle files and chainsaw files.

I use a 20 TPI checkering file for my jimping.

Occasionally, I will use chainsaw files in addition to the checkering file to add a little more dimension.

I use a flat needle file for spacing. I make a small notch with one corner of the flat file, then rock it up onto the other corner and make a second notch. There are other and probably better ways to do it.

I have a file that looks great for putting jipping on the flat part of a blade.
It is called a thread repair file.

I started using needle files and chainsaw files but now use a carbide cutter in my Dremel then finish with the chainsaw file to smooth it out.
