Hey guys. Just picked up a Case Sod Buster slip joint. I know they have been around a long long time. When did Case start making these?

Let's move this to the Traditional Forum.

I think it was in 1967.
The pattern itself is much older than that. But Case started producing the "sodbuster" model in 1967.

Late 60's actually, they were a late edition to the Case line up. The pattern is much earlier very early 1900's, perhaps last quarter of the 1800's, they were being made in Germany. The German name for the pattern roughly translates to "folding butcher Knife" or similar in older catalogs.

Post WWII, Henckels, Herder, and Schlieper (Eye Brand) models both standard and jumbo sized were getting really popular in the United States, I'd bet that caused Case to introduce it. Ka-Bar also introduced a jumbo version before Case too.

Wow thank you guys for all the info! I sure appreciate it. This model is the 2138. Jet black scales. I'm liking this knife. I stropped it and its razor sharp.

I never in a million years would have seen myself carrying a sodbuster but I ordered an orange handled sodbuster jr. and it has become my favorite edc. They are unbelievable slicers and the jr. is just the right size for a front pocket. Lightweight too, not to mention I'm a huge fan of delrin. Beautiful simplicity.

I first "discovered" and bought a Sodbuster in either 69 or 70, IIRC. There were 4 or 5 of us guys that hung around together, and we all bought them from one of the guys' aunt, who owned a hardware store. She charged us $6 apiece for them. It was a sort of rite of passage for us... along with the Tony Llama muleskinner boots and jeans split along the seam from the cuff upward about 3 or 4 inches to flare them over the boots. We were all individuals... just like each other! :D

Yes I usually carry a locking knife. The thought of a slip joint knife never appealed to me. The more I carry and use this Sod Buster, the more I like it. It just feels like a good general purpose knife. Simple blade and comfortable handle.
