Where can I buy a Spanish navaja these days?

A long time ago I bought this wonderful "ratcheting" navaja from the now MIA (maybe bankrupt) Knives of Spain.

It was stolen less than a year after I received it in 2002. I was so broke at the time I could not afford another. Now I stumbled on this somewhat blurry pic I took above years later and want to replace it. Can any of you help me find a place that sells this style? The blade is 5" and the handle is red stamina.

you can buy this at aitor.com or one of its distributors. also check ebay for knife collectors searlock

And you can buy one of the Cold Steel Kudu's as well. While more of a South African Okapi design, it too has the ratcheting lock. I have one and for the money it ranks right up there with Moras.

Yep... resurrected a thread from the dead...

I was reading "Culturally and Nationally sigificant knives?" And was interested in finding a traditional Spanish knife as well, however the links are dead.

Spyderco has a close offering. Are there any other, or another places to find them for sale?

If you do an internet search for "Spanish Navaja Knife" one of the top hits will be a physical store in Albacete, Spain that ships worldwide. They've got a great selection of Navaja style knives with prices ranging from $15USD to expensive customs. This is the best source for a wide range of these knives that I've found.

As just a side note, there are more cutlery stores in Albacete than any city I've ever been in. Plus the Spanish knife museum which is a must see if you are in Spain.

I've owned two Navajas from Spain, and they were both junk.

And when I say "junk", I'm not judging them by todays modern knife standards, they were junk measured by even early 1980's standards (I'm 50, and it was in the early 80's that I started recognizing what a "quality" knife was).

I only remember the brand of the most recent one I owned, a Joker brand from Spain with olivewood handles (bought from World Knives).

The other was a well-known brand, that's what encouraged me to buy it, I just can't remember the brand clearly enough to be certain.

The Joker had sloppy blade and lock play, and it had no blade stop, unless you count the edge of the blade hitting a pin that passed through the end of the handle (leaving a sizeable dent in the edge). The lock parts also had several exposed sharp points. The overall knife was rough and crude (looked great in the pictures. don't they always).

The previous one wasn't as bad in that it had no lock play, but it had all the other problems. And the lock release tab was rather chintzy, like it could snap off over time.

The knives struck me more as tourist souvenirs than actual cutting tools.

Both of my Navajas eventually ended up in the trash.

You might consider the lionSTEEL Gitano. Navaja vibes in a modern package. Great knife.

Hell yea dude, that's why I love this community! Different name, different country... I would have never of found this. Looks inspired by and used modern materials. I'm almost certain the fit and finish on the lionSTEEL will be better. I've eyeballed some of their offerings in the past but never pulled the trigger.

Awesome feedback from all! I'm open to further suggestions, keep em coming.

Theres few less known pretty good custom knifemakers in spain and can make you pretty good navaja for price, better than most factory stuff and depends what you want too...
