I just recently got into hammock camping and I don't have a tarp for overhead. Can someone suggests me something that I can use for it and still be light and waterproof?

Sportsmansguide Has 10x10 and 12x12 nylon tarps for around 30$ they hold up to rain well but are heavier than some higher end models.

the 12x12 is a bit large for a single hammock.

Hammock bliss also makes a nice tarp for there hammocks. and i believe campmor is carying there stuff now

Kelty's Noahs Tarps are relatively inexpensive, pretty lightweight for not being silnylon, cuben, etc. and are well made. Only come in white, though. They're also square in shape which allows you a lot of versatility.

If you are willing to spend more money you can get some great silnylon and silcordura tarps from companies like Mountain Laurel Designs, GoLite, Etowah Outfitters, Sea to Summit, Granite Gear, etc. These are tough materials that weigh little but are impressively tough. But then you need to decide if you want square or rectangular, catenary cut, etc. Regardless, avoid grommet attachment points as they tend to tear out.

I'll echo bearthedog's response. Get a light weight poncho. I don't have experience with the Integrel Designs, but a light weight poncho/tarp is just too versatile a piece of gear to be without (its just a bonus that they're perfectly sized for hammock camping!).

BTD, where did you get your Integral Designs Poncho from? I've been looking to pick that up for a while now, just haven't gotten to the point of actually shopping for it yet.

NM, just saw dealer section on website. :o

+1 on the Integral Designs sil-nylon poncho. Great quality and it will serve well for an over the hammock tarp.

I use a Clark Jungle hammock and it comes with its own rainfly/tarp.

Thanks for the quick replies all. I do have a USGI poncho, to me I think it might be to small.
Bear: Is the poncho you use the same size of the USGI?
EMS:The weight of the tarp can't be as heavy as the thicker one you get at the local Wally world.
I am going to check out the one you guys suggested ASAP. I can't see myself going back to a tent in the summer anytime soon. Unless the family goes, then that is a different story all together.

Make one out of tyvex. Get some tarp clips and add some guylines. Or try tying a wrap the corners around a pebble and tie lines off it. You can then cheaply decide which shape and size is right for you. Go to a construction site and ask for scrap or trade for beer. You can always spray paint it camo if you like. Later you can use it as a ground cloth etc.
