Hi eveyone, I'm new to knife making and so far I've made about 10 knives from pre-made blanks. This weekend I took a stab and cutting and grinding my own out of some 440 bar stock. Now it ready to heat treat. My neighbor has a acetelne torch but I dont know where to find this "firebrick" ? I heard I can crudely heat treat it this way ? does anyone have any tips ? where to buy a cheap oven ?

About 20 years ago I was in your shoes. I used a "rosebud" tip on an acetylene torch bringing it up to an even yellow-orange.
Now I just send everything to Paul Bos Heat Treating http://www.buckknives.com/downloads/Paul_Bos_Brochure.pdf
Let him know what rockwell hardness you want. I found I couldn't go higher than 59Rc or I would get a fine line of gray on the edge due to chips when trying to sharpen it. I still us 56 Rc on fillet knives so they are flexable and springy.

ellis custom knives.com has fire brick and refractory stuff etc.

If you make another 10 knives to go with the 10 you have Paul only charges 3.50 a blade good dam deal

You can make an oven for around $100-200 if you shop around for materials and research how to make it. There is an excellent tutorial here somewhere. Buy an oven for anywhere from $400-1000+ depending on size and options. Or send them off to someone who does heat treating.

I have an older used pedestal style Johnson gas furnace Model 120K, 90,000BTU, that might work as either a heat treating oven or possibly as a forge as well. The same model is still made in an updated version http://www.johnsongas.com/industrial/frn-hispeed.asp and I believe parts are still available. I have both a parts list an an instruction manual. This furnace needs refurbishing prior to use but for what I want for it ($200) it's a great start towards a high-quality furnace. The Johnson people have told me it's worth considerably more but I'd rather sell it quickly and gain the space it's occupying. It would have to be picked up in the Syracuse, NY area.

I have 22.5" EvenHeat Oven used. It's about 6 month old and was used 4 times.
I'll sell it to you for $650. If I am not mistaken it costs $900 or more new.

If you are doing stainless, it is an air hardening steel that requires precise control. A torch won't do it right. It requires time at temp. somethinmg like 30 minutes at 1850 off the top of my shaved head. You can't do that with a torch.

Senf it to Paul.

I know you guys have good intentions, but selling is not allowed in the forums, take it to e-mail or over to the "knifemaker supplies" forum.

Carry on. :D

Sorry. I was either unaware of the restriction or, more likely, had forgotten about it. Thanks for catching my error and your advice.
