Hello, I'm new to the forum and I was wondering what brands make the best viking sword or ULFBERHT? I would want something that can take a lot of abuse, and that's balanced well. But mostly I'm looking for the quality of the blade. Thanks

Well... If you're looking for a top notch reproduction Viking style sword look no further than Albion Swords. You might look at a site Kult of Athena for a range of other makes. A point of information, swords are not tools meant for tasks such a chopping wood, smacking cinder blocks, or cutting through steel rebar. Durability of a quality sword will depend on what you're smacking and how you're smacking a target. A typical Viking sword was rather thin in cross section and optimized for cutting flesh and bone targets. So the Viking sword was not a sharpened crowbar. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information! I was thinking it might have to take abuse fighting against shields and armor, but had no intention of chopping wood or hitting cinder blocks. Also, is the steel used in Albion swords crafted by hand, or machined? Thanks again

Second Albion. You're not gonna find any better than that short of custom, really. Arms and Armour is also quite good. Longship Armoury has nice blades, but don't remember if he does a Viking blade or not. You looking for a blunt? I can't imagine why you'd need a sword that could take abuse fighting shields and armors that's sharp, anyways...

Thanks a lot! I have one more question... Do Albion swords come with scabbards? And if it's out of stock, will it be available again? Because I think it said they only make a limited number of swords for each model. Thanks again

And no, I would prefer a sharpened sword, I just thought if it could handle that abuse it would make for a better sword. I'm still pretty new to this stuff.

Check also viking-shield.com They carry squire line Albion versions not found on the Albion site. These can be sharpened, scabbards can be made. For packages ready to go (sharp with scabbards) check out Kult of Athena and adjust the budget of cost/expectation ratio Some of the Hanwei, Windlass and Del Tin are quite good swords at a smaller budget. There is also Darksword Armory if one feels needy quickly for everything at once except historical accuracy. The Hanwei/ Tinker collaborations are good/best bang for the budget buck SH2408 if not backordered everywhere. Also Valiant Armory, who uses Gus Trim designs.

Cheers

addendum

If this is your first sword and have the patience, window shop a good long while before jumping.

If you are looking for a battle ready sword to play with, back yard cut and bang around go with a Windlass or Hanwei which can be had for $300 or less. Albion swords are outstanding swords but costly. As others have stated Kult of Athena usually has a great selection a the best pricing. Any sword even the best quality of High Carbon steel can and will eventually break if abused. Swords were the high end sports cars of their day and very few could afford or own one and usually a warrior used other weapons for combat....axe, spear, seax. Swords will not handle steel on steel contact very well even the best quality ones.

Lots of recent interest in ULFBERHTs. Shopping for one is like many other blades. Do you want a mass produced sword? If hand made, how much work are you willing to pay for? Genuine U's were outnumbered by copies even back then. The genuine article was the apex of Viking long sword design, craftsmanship and effort. One needed a large purse, or a corpse that did.
