Where can I get a quenching container?
I have been looking around not finding any info.
I am going to be doing hunting blades and maybe some Bowies so about 14 inch depth.
BTW I know just about anything will work.

THX in advance!!!

Go to home Depot and buy a Bayou Classic turkey fryer.:D

best container is one of those carbonated pop tanks... made of stainless with a top that locks down... about 2.5 feet tall.. best part is you lock the top down and never worry about knocking the sucker over... sometimes you can get them at the surplus stores .. best 25 bucks i've ever spent

I use a 5 gallon galvanized steel bucket I got at Lowes. Relatively inexpensive. I wish it had a lid though.

I just got an 81mm ammo can that is just the right size for 5 gallons, probably 6. He was asking 12.00obo. Using parcel post for shipping my total cost was less than 25 bucks a can shipped.

I have one of these and its fantastic.
just do some googling for Cornelious keg and home brewing and you should be able to come up with some pretty cheap in used condition(dont bother with reconditioned)

IF IT IS METAL, TALL ENOUGH, STABLE, AND LIQUID TIGHT....IT IS A QUENCH TANK.

I have used :
Cut off oxygen and CO2 tanks
soda tanks
Military containers.
Steel pipe welded to a circular base.
Cooking pots
4" shell casings
And my favorite portable quench tank - Bill Moran's 3 gallon camp style coffee pot.

The coffee pot sounds sort of silly, but think about it. They can be found cheap at surplus shops and ebay. They have a lid, a handle, and a spout (usually with a screen). They can be easily warmed. They are deep enough for most normal blade sizes.
A second idea is a 30 to 100 cup coffee maker ( About 1 gallon to 4 gallons of oil). They can often be found cheap at the thrift stores. Ones that the element has burned out can be found at a local church for free ( for some reason they never throw them away). If the element is still good, the pot will warm the oil for you.

I scored a dead hand-truck style stainless steel wet/dry shop-vac I was all excited about converting, but lost track of it in a move.

Not big enough or deep enough. Also arguably not long enough at 13.5 inches. I had a square turkey roasting pan early on for edge first quench. It was quite a bit wider than that thing and it was still not big enough for large bowies. the tang got in the way."Depth" on that appears to actually mean length because they have the height and width listed at 3.5 and 4.5 inches. If you are only going to have one tank, you need one that you can quench tip first IMO
Ok guys here is one for ya all ..a "Mud" pan for drywall mud from the "Home Depot/ Lowes" kind of stores. they are either plastic on the cheap side but offer stainless ones as well in both a foot and 2 foot length about 3 inch wide and 3 deep

I use old alum fire extguishers, and i have an ol ammo shell as well. Im gonna build a horizontal out of an ol oxygen tank.

I've got two of the biggest ammo cans I've ever seen. I think they're 40mm? They're blue colored and a lot bigger than the normal OD green ones. I've got 5 gallons of Parks 50 in one and 5 gallons of Parks AAA in the other. Takes care of all my oil quenching needs for now.

The best for me is a 22qt electric roaster. Has a lid and easy to heat up oil all in one. I have my oven on a rolling cart with the roaster on the bottom shelf below it. Very convenient.

I get canola in a 5lt tin, use a tin opener and take the top off then you have a ready made quench tank with quench oil in it for about $14.

I use a roasting pan(w/lid). It's about 5 inches deep, 9 across and 12 long.
Got it at Goodwill for a few dollars.

Checkout thrift stores, Lots of pots and pans. The ammo can is a great idea too.

I got something. A "narow stainles 3.5-5 gallon tea dispenser" Bunn makes a 3.5 and 4 gallon. A couple other companies make 5 gallon units (one of which can be oredred from costco.com for $85 delivered). The Bunn 4 gallon has the longest length inside, 19" long (front to back), 6" wide and 13" from the brim to the bottom of the tank (21" heigh overall). The two 5 gallon units are just a little wider adn have deeper tanks that aren't as long. Probably better options if your OAL will be less than 15-16". One is made by update international, the other by...Idea Solutions, but those two 5 gallon dispensers seem to be shorter from front to back and will only allow a ca 14" OAL blade to be horizontally submerged.

Here is are a couple pics of the bunn TDO-N-3.5 for refe

These all have a hollow space in the bottom and one might want to screw some wood on there or something to make it more stable.

please let me know if ther are any ammo cans that are about 5-6" wide, ca 20" long and at least a foot deep. I am only familiar w/a few small arms ammo cans.

Remember to get it big enough to do some agitating ! A snug cover keeps out dirt when not used and is the best way to smother a fire if the oil ignites.
