Where can i get some zdp 189

Japan.
I'm not being a butt head (for once) . . . am I right guys that Japan does not export that steel in bar stock but only as a finished product ? ? ?

I have been hearing the same thing, i found a retailer that speaks Japanese and he has some in stock thats he's willing to sell. However he is charging crazy amounts of money......and i mean crazy.
He's charging 380 us for a piece wit the following dimensions: 1.77 inch x 11.8 inch x 0.196 inch (converted from metric).........

Could not find cowry x on the jantz page.

regards, ed

I know I saw some bars of zdp189 for sale a few weeks ago through Google because I was looking at them myself . They weren't cheap and I'm not sure exactly where it was but it was one of the knife supply stores I found through searching buy zdp-189 on a Google search.

I spend a whole day on google, sunday, to find some.......without any luck so far. I'have also send a number of e-mails. I hope these e-mails are gonna help me get some. we'll see. If i do find some, i will post it in this thread.

I exchanged email with Hitachi Metals USA several years ago. They would sell any of their tool steels(https://www.hitachi-metals.co.jp/e/products/auto/ml/pdf/cwts_b.pdf) i wanted with one ton minimum buy. they could not help at all with obtaining the mythical Shirogami or Aogami series cutlery steels(https://www.hitachi-metals.co.jp/e/yss/search/cutlery.html). from researching on line, it appears that Hitachi makes these steels in small quantities, markets to select dealers, and almost all their output is sold and used in Japan.
As knifemakers on the wrong side of the ocean, we might occasionally see Aldo or Jantz offering small quantities. closest thing i could find would be Crucible CPM 20CV, which you can find at Alpha Knife.

Thanx scott,

Just received an email from jantz. No more cowry x in stock and they think its no longer made. Fallkniven seems to still use this steel.......so i wrote them an e-mail. Doubt they will reply ....never hurts to try though.

Last I checked, Jantz Supply had CowryX.

That was my suggestion, but it does not seem to be there. IIRC, my last piece was about $200 for a bar that made one sashimi blade. That was probably 12-15 years ago, and it might have been from Mick Koval.

i wrote fallkniven an e-mail........they use cowry x, they are not willing to share any info though. As expected............that's to bad. Hitachi steel is gonna get back to me, but i don't really expect good news. And i do have some more leads. If this keeps going like this i might have to spend some real money, hahahaha.
