I wanted to toss this up here for potential kitchen knife buyers, since there's been some discussion of this lately.
Personally, I've found the best prices on good (not great, but very good) knives at stores that buy and resell overstock, like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Gabriel Bros., if you have those in your area. I've also gotten a couple off of eBay, but only a couple of specific knives that I couldn't find elsewhere.
Personally, I don't need great knives, but you can often Wusthof, Henkells, etc. on sale at these discount locations. I just bought a great 4 piece knife set from Farberware for $12, at Gabriel bros. , which is one of the best deals I've ever gotten.
IMO, the lower end of the great knives are plenty good enough for 99% of kitchens. And when I say this, I mean the cheaper lines that Wusthof, and Henkels sell. I think the steel is pretty much the same, you might be paying for prettier knives, bolsters, maybe more ergonomic handles on the more expensive sets.
Thoughts?

Haha, wow. Sadly I don't know, after your 9000 posts if you usually buy expensive EDCs or expensive survival/outdoors knives, but that's simply retarded. If you ever should spend money on quality knives it's probably for the kitchen.

Our 'nice' set was bought at Service Merchandise.
Our newest kitchen knives are Old Hickory, bought at whichever online dealer had the lowest price. SMKW?
The other kitchen knives we have (older USA-made Chicago Cutlery and new Wasabi knives) were gifts.

I agree. But I don't EDC expensive knives either, nor any knife that can't be easily and painlessly replaced.

I love my Tosagata Hocho Santoku form Japan Woodworker. There aren't many handmade knives to be had for $30 out there, and that particular knife is only really found a few places on the Interweb. The only knife I go to more often than that one is my Frosts 10" cook's knife, which also had to be ordered over the phone.

Most brick and mortar stores seem to be limited in selection. The only place near me that I found to have Forschner Victorinox knives is a place somewhat near me called Central Michigan Butcher Supply. The only place I've seen Shun knives is Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
