Where is the best place to find/buy an anvil?

I just recently started to try to get a workshop together. I have a forge, I have a vice, and I have a work bench, but I lack an actual anvil. At the moment I'm using my vices built in anvil, but it's literally a 4x4 inch square. No horn, No Hardy hole, no space. So I was hoping someone could recommend one preferably under $300 but I will take any suggestions.

Zeke, fill out your profile. That will help people to know where you are, for instance, and possibly help if you are local.
All I can say is, canvas local used tool sellers (not so much "antiques" stores) craigslist, and keep an eye out at scrap yards and at your local machine shop/steel suppliers.
Try to find out if there are ABANA or other smithing related organizations in your area, or any events that might have some tailgate sales going on.

Zeke,
I have run into the same issue. Luckily I found a local place that services the railroad and they sell pieces of track. I picked up a couple of 12" lengths of track from him and am in the process of shaping them to meet my needs. Of course they aren't perfect but they'll do until I can come across an anvil at a decent price.

I just told everyone I know I needed an anvil. I ended up with a few of them. 3 Peter Wright's and 1 Henry Wright. Lucky, I know. Living in a rural area helps.
I sold off 3 to fund a 230 lb Hay Budden which I will keep forever and kept the Henry Wright because I've never seen one before.
So, I would recommend spreading the word that you are looking for one. You never know who knows a guy that has one to get rid of. Good luck in your search.

You can get a Cliff Carrol or NC 70# anvil for that price + a little, shipped to your door.
