I have an Uluchet and it is a good hunter's tool. The D2 blade comes very sharp and holds an edge well. The curvature of the blade is useful for skinning. It also does well at cutting up game. For example, it easily takes legs/heads/etc. off birds, rabbits, and other small game. It also chops small branches reasonably well. However, as you may be able to see from the edge geometry, it performs less effectively on larger branches. With its more tapered blade and thinner edge, a Gransfors Bruks mini belt hatchet will out chop it on a larger branch.

The kydex sheath is nice and worth getting if you intend to belt carry the Uluchet. The standard leather sheath is OK if you're going to stuff it in a pack.

I can fit the Uluchet in several of the pockets on my BDU style hiking pants, using either sheath. However, if you want something smaller, perhaps someone else will be able to point you in the right direction.

thanks man ill keep it in mind...

Check out eBay for a Marble's folding pocket axe. I don't know if they still make them, but they turn up on eBay periodically, and they are pretty good axes. The handle folds into an edge guard and they will fit into a back jeans pocket.

Those Marbles are neat little axes. However, I thought they were out of production for many years and commanded pretty high prices from collectors. Nonetheless, they would probably be well under the $600 mentioned in the original post.

The Marbles safety axes are on ebay all the time, brand new but made in China.
They are usually around 30$.
I have one of the Marbles (China) hunters double-bits and its a well made solid little axe.

The Vaughan subzero sounding axe is small and light enough to carry in your pocket. (Only 30$ on ebay).
And after it has been re-profiled properly it cuts incredibly well.
I actually carried a (sheathed lol) one in my hiking shorts one day while hiking.
You honestly could not tell it was there.
And i am only 5 ft 9, not a giant or anything, lol.
Its 11 inches long, relatively flat and only 10 ounces.
I got one on ebay recently
here it is next to a Gerber Backpaxe

And next to a Marbles double-bit hunter

I wanted a hatchet which is small and light enough to be easily worn on the belt, and of a design and construction quality to be extremely efficient.

I chose the Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet which has a ten and a half inch handle, hatchet face is two and a half inches long and the weight is eleven ounces.

The hatchet comes with a leather sheath which fits onto a belt and has a thumb break strap.

A Master Smith at Gransfors designed this high performance hatchet to be easily carried on the belt (he's a hiker and canoeist). He personally makes every Mini Hatchet and stamps his initials (LP) next to the Gransfors Bruks Crown.

Each Mini Hatchet has a 20 year warranty and is literally razor sharp straight out of the box!

I have no connection to Gransfors Bruks other than as a very impressed and happy customer. I love this Hatchet! (o:

I'd love a GB mini but they are close to 150$ over here.
Someday i'll get one but for now the Vaughan works for me.
The Vaughan is only 30$ and with a little modding its almost as good.
There are side by side pics of both about halfway down this page

$600 is too much for me to spend on this Warren Thomas mini axe.... even though it is worth the price...that is why I do not get it

T-Axe2.jpg

this is a T-axe II from Joel Pirela Design and is very expensive ($1200-$1500) I think he only made between 8-15 of them and it is an auto

tholiver,

I appreciate the observation on the Chinese Marbles axes. I've seen them a couple times and the ones I saw weren't bad looking.

I thought the poster before me was referring to the vintage Marbles axes with the folding handle/guard. I haven't seen copies of that model come out of China but would be very interested to see a sample if they do.

Thanks,

Folding + Chopping in one blade is a bad combination. There's a reason you don't see any of these that aren't way out of most of our price ranges. It's because you can't make a quality folding "axe" that can take the abuse that an actual axe needs to take for cheap. Your best bet is to give up on trying to find a folding axe and either get a folding saw (which I shudder to recommend because I personally hate them) or a small pocket-sized hatchet.

Just my $0.02. *shrug*

I dont want it to chop wood...just as a small daily user

I have experience with, and can recommend, the Gerber BackPaxe. It is a pretty fair hatchet for the price. I have even carried it in my pocket, though not for long or far. The weight is reasonable, though any axe is a bit much for backpacking (Victorinox knives with saws are much better for that). I prefer a cutlass (machete) most of the time, since I need it mostly for clearing soft woods and opening fruits and coconuts, but the BackPaxe works nicely for making long pieces of wood into shorter pieces.

yes i'm curious too. those look like they would give up way too much leverage for any legititamate chopping stroke and it looks like it would be awkward for utility uses as well. they would be unique but for self defense carry i would want something with a point for thrusting and for utility use a conventional folder would be better imo.

Ok, now I'm curious. Care to elaborate a bit? "...daily user..." for what?

CDI man CDI...no seriously I have no idea if it would offer anything over a regular pocket knife..I figure it will have a use ...I will figure out what else I will use it on later :D
