Where to buy Silicon carbide powder locally?

I want to buy some for lapping locally. Anyone know where i can buy?

Silicon carbide is used as blast media in some sand blasting operations. Find the outfit in your area that supplies the media to such operations and they should be able to help you. Google the name of your closest industrial area along with the term "blast media". A lot of those suppliers will have it in up to 1200 grit. But you might have to buy a 50-lb bag.

You could also check for folks who sell lapidary supplies. They would likely sell smaller quantities.

Lee Valley Tools sells it in many different grits for just that purpose. I don't know if LVT is local to you or not.

Thank you. I will try that.

No unfortunately not. I would have to order online. If it wasn't for shipping being so high, I would order.

So how many stones would 4oz lap? If that is enough to last say 50 lappings, then I might just buy online. If it only last say 20 lappings, then it wouldn't be worth it to buy.

Four ozs. should last you beyond 20 lappings . Depending on how much you use per project . Good thinking Knarf, I didn't think of that . He may can go to a metal shop or body shop and pick up a 8oz. jar full of their left overs for cheap . I've seen those 50lb. sacks sell for under under 10$ . DM

I suddenly feel possessed of a sincere wish that all of humanity flashes out of existence. Can't explain why though :/
For now I'll just settle for a /facepalm.

check out detroit abrasives. they carry all kinds of abrasive powders. what grits were you looking for?

I bought a pound ea of 600 and 1200 at Arrowhead lapidary - it'll last dozens/ a hundred, potentially more. The 120 and 220 grit are the most useful - picked those up at a shop that sells supplies for gang reel-mowers for golf courses. Smaller than that and you'll be at it a long time but come in handy for fine polishing of things like Spyderco ceramics and Arkansas stones. The grit breaks down as you lap - effectively reducing grit value the longer you work it.

Do you have a Harbor Freight tools outlet nearby? They sell abrasive media for sandblasting.

How about a hobbyist store like Michaels or Hobby Lobby? Wonder if there are any arts and crafts hobbies that use abrasives?

I do have a Harbour Freight down the street from me.

Any more info on the Harbour Freight stuff? Size? Price? Grit?

Thanks
