Working on restoring an old axe head and re hanging it. I've read and watched "An Axe To Grind" a half dozen times, and I'm ready to give it a shot. One of the tools I'm missing is a wooden mallet. I looked on line for them, with no luck. Where can I find one, other than ebay?

You can carve wooden mallet out of any tough hardwood. Woods with coarse intertwined grains hold up the best. I have a couple quick-n-dirty London Plane mallets that have held up to serious abuse for going on 7 years now. I like to make them with flat faces for driving wood wedges. It's important that the head taper gently into the handle so as not to create a weak spot.

I use a rubber mallet until I have the head fitting just right. I take the last couple of whacks with a 2lb sledge to ensure good purchase. When I first started rehanging, I ruined a nice Wetterlings handle by using the sledge for the whole thing. Ouch!

You can do this many ways depending on what you have on hand. You can place the wedge on your concrete basement floor and hit the butt with firewood if it comes to that.
