Good Morning,

I am new to knife/sword making and am trying to figure out where everyone purchases thick plate steel to make tools/items like tables, tool stands, and large cross guards etc. I get blade steel from Jantz currently

I am in the east Dallas area and any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
K.

Just do an internet search for steel suppliers in your area. (Or look in the yellow pages if you can still find such a book.) Steel suppliers are pretty common, and so is plate steel. You should find plenty of options.

Thanks O.B. for the information.

Welcome to BladeForums and Shoptalk!

In addition to searching for steel sales in the Dallas area, also search "fabrication shops" or like terms. Both places usually have a "drops" bin of cutoffs and will frequently allow you to rummage and purchase at scrap prices.

Don't overlook Amazon for smaller pieces. Some enterprising shops have caught on to the fact there's an excellent market to home hobby guys needing small project pieces. I'd be leery of anything called "blade steel" someone there is selling, but the plate and bar is usually just plain low-carbon construction steel like A46.

Hope that helps.

What fitzo fitzo said.

Welding and machine shops tend to have piles of steel drops they’d like to get rid of. eBay has some good deals as well.

Stick to the suppliers like Jantz for your blade steel though.

Getting 1/4” mild steel plate from the big name hardware stores the prices varies for me. I’ve gotten 1/4”x18”x6” plate for anywhere from $20 to $30 from the same store. Depending on how much you need for projects it might be pricey. Also in my experience they will usually only have one or two plates in stock, if at all.

I've picked up at Metal Supermarkets on 35 around Commonwealth as I recall. I use Coremark Metals now because they are 10 minutes north of my house, they have almost everything for fab work (we've had them do fab work as well), and are good people. There's several other places in E Dallas/Garland/Mesquite area.
