Hello all. My dad was an avid custom knife collector. I have boxes of them, all meticulously stored. My question is where is the best place to sell them?

Is it a site like this? Or eBay? Something else?

I’ve sold some on eBay but I just had two listings removed because of a “policy violation.” The best I can understand is because one knife was a switchblade. The other one is a folding knife so I really don’t understand why.

Would love any tips you can share.

Buy a membership and you can not only sell here, you can also ask for valuations.

Welcome to Bladeforums.

If you don't know exactly what you have, or what they are worth, this forum is a good place to ask.

It's also a good place to sell, for the simple fact that there are A LOT of knife enthusiasts here who browse The Exchange (where knives are sold here).

Also, unlike ebay, there are no restrictions on selling switchblades here, and you don't have to pay any kind of commission.

Like Synov said, to sell knives here, or ask for valuations, you need to be a Gold member or higher. A Gold membership costs $30 and lasts 365 days. It comes with other perks like being able to send and receive private messages (important for conducting sales), as well as post pictures directly from your computer (a lower level of membership requires that you use a third party hosting site like Imgur.com).

Of course some types of knives might sell here better than others. The types of knives you have will determine the best place online to sell them.

You don't need to be a Gold (paying) member to post pics and ask the forum to identify your knives.

If you want to learn more about becoming a Gold member click on "Paid Subscriptions" in the dark blue strip across the top of the screen.

And if you want to take a look at The Exchange, click on "Knife Exchange" at the far left of the dark blue strip.

You may land up selling multiple places, to find the best market for each knife, but here is a good place to start. With a gold or higher membership, you can get valuations and sell at no additional fee( for the year)

Certain knives are not allowed on ebay. Automatic opening blades, push knives, brass knuckle type handle guards. Although these types are not allowed, you will see them constantly sold on eBay.

Having your listings removed because of a “policy violation” seems to be done by a random algorithm. I see these types of knives sold consistently on ebay and also experienced bidding on these types of knives, only to have the auction canceled.

Ebay is very inconsistent with most things it does. Ebay has the knife policy listed on the site.

If you are looking for values, follow the advice given, purchase a gold membership. Also, you can look at past sales on ebay.

Pros and cons to selling on both venues. Take some time to learn. Scams on each is the major issue. But these venues are your main two options.

Don't rush selling the collection, especially if have valuable custom knives. Learn the values first, consider condition, overall economy (people have money to spend), original boxes included is a plus for a lot of collectors.

Sell your least valuable knife first, until you are comfortable with the process. Try both venues, see what works for you.

C cmdgator buying a Bladeforums membership is a great idea so that you can use the exchange where many discerning knife afis lurk daily. And this post will help you avoid many pitfalls that people stumble into when they go into it unprepared.

And this:

The problem with Selling on eBay- The Seller pays 18% or so in Fees and the Buyer might pay Sales Tax. There can be an almost 30% spread between what you get and what they pay.
