I just got a 3M 6700 (small) face mask respirator. wow this thing is comfortable.

There are so many choices for the cartridge filter, can anyone give me some suggestions for a good all around one for knifemaking? Most likely handle materials will be stabilized woods, micartas. Probably some ironwood too.

thanks

A standard HEPA cartridge will be just fine. These should be pink in color and may say P100 on them. These will keep out particulates in the respirable range. They also tell you when they need changed out. When they clog up, throw them out and change them.

You do not need a combination cartridge unless you are using some solvents that require this. Look at the MSDS or the label on solvents container for safety information. If you can't find the MSDS (or material safety data sheet), many companies have them posted on their web sites.

For those folks who grind or shape for extended periods of time, protecting your respiratory tract is extremely important. Same with fume produced by welding. This is especially true in the winter months when folks work in poorly ventilated areas to try and conserve heat.

Masks and filters are cheap. Lungs are not.

On my 7500 half mask, I use a 3M 7093 (P100 HEPA) for general grinding of wood and metal. When grinding Micarta or painting, I put a 3M 6006 (multi-gas) underneath it using the adapter. I think both should work on the 6700.
