Hey guys
Quick question, what kind of glue do you use to glue your leather on a wooden strop?
Thanks, Andy

Contact Cement. Apply to both the wood and the leather untill they stop soaking it up, let it tack up for at least five minutes then press together. Be careful as once they touch its hard to get them apart. Apply some pressure, a slick smooth object will work fine, your done! :)

^^^^This. Barges is good...get it at Ace Hardware. Even easier (and lots cheaper) is Dap Weldwood. Get it at any and all hardware stores. Works for all kinds of leather projects. It comes in liquid form (like honey) and a gel that's a little easier to work with as it does not run.

I made all of my strop blocks using carpet tape (double-sided). Most of my blocks are made using 2-1/2" wide red oak, picked up at the home improvement center. It just so happens, the carpet tape is also available in 2-1/2" width. This is a very quick and mess-free way to stick the leather to the wood.

+1 on the contact cements! Just make sure that the leather surface that you are applying the cement to is roughed up really well for the best adhesion. The 'tool' made for this purpose is really nothing more than a file cleaning brush. Although a clean grill brush, or steel or brass gun cleaning brush will work just as well. As mentioned, let it set until it seems almost dry before pressing the two surfaces together. I place another wooden block on top of the leather and then leave it, clamped, in the sun for about an hour. I don't care how much compound you work into it, I have yet to have one turn loose.

For my stropes I used a leather glue. It works great. It´s made by company "Uhu" - I don´t know if it´s available in the US.

Kind regards

Rubber cement, works like contact cement but you can replace the leather if it gets worn.

Thanks everybody! Once again, is it not awesome that we have a knife community like BF?

I have used the 3M spray adhesive. I think it is 77 spray adhesive. Has worked great for me so far. Be careful, as when you place the leather to the wood, make sure it's straight. You can also go back and trim any excess with any of these methods.

UHU is available in the USA. Good stuff. Never used it on leather though. I don't think this is deal spotting so I am going to give it a whirl. I found a crazy website called www.thistothat.com. You type in what your are trying to glue to what and it makes adhesive recommendations. It seems current enough and it seems acurate as just about every adhesive noted in this thread so far is in there. It also gives advice on toxicity etc. I don't think it is put out by any firm as all sorts of products (3M 77, UHU, and Barges) all show up.

I used regular Elmer's wood glue. It has held together for almost four years now.

I used E6000 which is available in the craft section at walmart. I've been using it for years and anything and everything.
