Which Hinderer To Get Next?

I just picked up this Hinderer XM-18 3.5" Wharncliffe in trade this week. Most of the knives I own are Medford. But I'm really digging this knife! It came with Custom made Green Micarta scales, a matching green Micarta Filler Tab, Bronze factory Standoffs, and a Sand Blasted rear Ti scale. I knew very little about Hinderer's prior to the last few days. I had no idea they came from the factory with like 5 different rear scales. I just really wanted a nice Wharncliffe, and the Hinderer appealed to me.

My buddy gave me a new Brown factory scale, which I put on. Today I ordered a factory Bronze Clip and Filler Tab. Not the Holey one, but the regular one. I also ordered a Bronze Factory Pivot screw. That's it for now. Though I may eventually add the Bronze Scale Screws and Nuts.

I like how the Jimping has bronze in it from the factory. It goes well with my color scheme.

I know I want blue one for sure. Just need to decide what grind. The two I am most interested in are the Spanto and Bowie. I guess the slicer is on the list too. Definitely 3.5" for sure. That is the proper size for me. What do you guys think about which grind I should get? I buy knives because I think they are cool. They are glorified box cutters for me. I'm not going to pretend I use them for all sorts of tasks and outdoor adventures. I actually own a business that ships out and receives many boxes a day, so I do use my knives a fair amount. Even though I have a Shipping Manager and staff, I still like to open me up some boxes :) I'm sure they chuckle when I whip out my Praetorian and get to work!

Been thinking of getting a wharnie myself because I kind of liked the way it was angled to easily open letters and carton boxes. I guess I have been spoilt with the Insingo blade design on my Sebenza.

I am not sure if the slicer grind is still in production. Maybe it is, maybe it is not, I don't know. I bought myself a spear point and kind of liked it a lot. It is like the in between of the spanto grind and the slicer grind. The spanto is more of a multitask blade made for prying and heavy duty works, whereas the slicer is as its name suggests. The spear point is really like the in between category and I have been able to get the spear point grind to a razor sharp for slicing. Looking at the thickness on the spine, I am confident it could help me do some light to medium prying should the need really arise. Regardless what you go for, I don't think you could be wrong with any.

The spanto style blade is popular and easy to move if you decide to sell it. It's also such a robust blade that you can have it re ground into a slicer without fear of compromising the strength of the blade.
Whichever blade style you chose will be personal preference on which one appeals to you the most. No doubt they are well built heavy duty knives and will be dependable for a long, long time.
There is a wide range of personalizing a Hinderer.
Cardboard can be brutal on most steels. As you probably already know. I unbox appliances that have binders in the cardboard.
I've got a spanto that is re ground into a slicer. It made all the difference in the world on the performance of the blade.

From my limited experience with RH knives - I had the slicer and spearpoint before, they were OK but for lack of a better word bland. Felt like I was paying high dollar for a lesser grind than say Spyderco's FFG. Something about the Spanto did it for me though, looks good and unique (to me). I am not some hardcore outdoor guy, I only need my knives for slicing, cutting and scraping etc. everyday stuff. But it is one knife I am not afraid to pry with

Honest and refreshing post that I can totally relate to. I sell knives for a living and mostly just get to use them in the same way you do, opening and packaging boxes at the shop. Both the Bowie and the Spanto have been staring at me lately and I can not decide which I want. I already own the Spear Point and Skinner. I have not decided but will tell you the same thing I tell all of my customers. Get the one that appeals to you the most! If not you will be back sooner rather than later for it. They will both do a great job for what you are planning to use them for. Good luck in your decision!

Hey Jason, welcome to the Hinderer herd. One of my most relied upon EDC's in a while is a battle bronze Bowie (3.5" XM18). I have experience with spantos and wharnies, and must say this bowie beats them both for the tasks my EDC sees. I plan to pick up a 24 in bowie in fact - I like it that much.

My favorite is easily the slicer grind. Even though I do prefer larger knives (XL Glove size), and I do dig my 3.5" XM, my 3" sees more pocket time. It's funny... There's nothing that I "love" about my XMs. I have other similarly priced knives that scratch the aesthetic and fit and finish qualities that warm my heart... But my XMs may or may not be my favorite knives.

Just got my first Hinderer XM-18 3.5" Spanto Grind. Now i am also looking for what to get for may next one

I took your advice! I just bought a brand-new blue bowie from a member here! Can't wait to get it.

Shannon, how thin is the tip on the Bowie? That was my only concern.

From what I have seen the Bowie grind is fairly thick and doesn't come to the needle point tip that plague many other "tactical Bowie folders" (I have seen a few broken tips). I am also thinking this is my next Hinderer.

I've had a 3 inch slicer, a 3.5 inch slicer, and recently picked up an eklipse. My favorite of all three is the eklipse. It just seems sexy.

I have finally decided to pick up my first XM-18 as well. The 3.5 seems readily available, but unfortunately I do not see the 3" available anywhere. Are these just made in smaller numbers?

Yea I just think they aren't as readily available at this point. Even on eBay. The 3.5 is everywhere. And zero 3"

Yeah I had an Eklipse. I do think the handle ergos are the best on the Eklipse. The one I had was a regrind, and a really good one. It was a zero edge and a tad thin for me. If RHK releases a slicer Eklipse I'll be all over it!

Get that bowie in your hands yet?

It should be here tomorrow. I already ordered blue Ti standoffs, clip, filler, and handle nuts. They should be here by thursday.

Today I have a bronze swivel screw, clip and filler coming for my brown wharnie. I will slap those parts on as soon as they get here. It already has the bronze standoffs installed. Came that way.

I'm surprised you are not interested in the new Medford FUK I have for sale :) Tough to turn down for $575!
