i was going to get a cold steel chisa. but have since changed my mind and am looking at the cheness ko-katana which has a 21'' blade and the dynasty forge which has a 23 1/2'' blade. i wonder which lenght would be best suited for close quarters. would the 21'' be too short?

The difference in length is barely worth noting. Unless you happen to be taking formal classes which have a set preference for blade length, it's simply a matter of personal preference.

Personally, I'd go with the Dynasty Forge. I've heard good things about their blade quality, and IIRC their fittings are better and their wrap is tighter. Chenness has decent blades but, from everything I've read, their hilts leave a bit to be desired.

Dynasty Forge has great quality control.

The Cheness Tenchi series wakizashi or ko-katana is tough to beat for the money.

I ended up getting the Dynasty Forge Ko Katana. I've had excellent customer service experience with DF.

Out of those three, Dynasty is the only way to go. No contest.
