Which RMJ?

New to tomahawks, not to blades. Looking at the RMJ hawks and wondering which one to try to get. The Kestrel looks appealing, and I like the Shrike but those seem nowhere to be found. Any suggestions on RMJ or others? Found a Burt Foster but it's $1100 and not sure it's worth twice an RMJ. Sure is pretty though. Also read the thread about the RMJ steel on here. Most RMJ's out there seem to be 80 CRV2. Not that worried about it as I'm sure I wouldn't wear it out, but I see where a couple years ago Ryan posted he's going to 1075 steel. Will ride in my truck most of the time for whatever comes my way and in the backcountry a lot as I hunt 2 to 3 months out of the year. Thanks for the help.

Looking at the kestrel feather, seems to be the right size for the woods and other applications,

They’ve changed steels quite a few times over the years. I wouldn’t worry about specifics too much.

I have owned and used many of their designs. I really like the 2015 Little Bird which turns up for sale from time to time, the Shrike (best handle, Loggerhead hammer poll version is great), and Berserker. I tend to think the full thickness Kestrel/Eagle/Shrike are all a little thick for doing stuff in the woods. The Kestrel Light might work better, also look for a Weezerker. If you can find a 3V Syndicate Raven for a good price that would be a great score - there was one on Facebook not long ago for 500ish.

+ 1 for Kestrel feather. It’s light compared to the others. The feather is still .26-28 thick, not breaking. Any steel RMJ used will hold up to abuse. The ones I’ve had in 80crv2 hold a better edge and don’t accumulate micro chips as much as than the 4140 versions. The recent batches have removable scales as well ( last 18 months or so ). They are dangerous toys. RMJ hawks are definitely capable of doing whatever the maker claims they do.

For less than 1/2 to 1/3 the price - American Tomahawk Company Model 1 or 2 is excellent as well. Better camp tools than the RMJ shrike or Kestrel imo.

Honorable mention for the Winkler line as well.

Out of everything mentioned though - Wenger Blades Loki is my pick. It’s got the best of RMJ and Winkler in one

+1 on the ATC (owned by RMJ now) and Wenger hawks. I like the Beohawk a little more than the Loki.

I want an RMJ war hammer or a hawk. They’re always out of stock when I look. I also like the look of the combat Africa.

The American Tomahawk Model 1 (made by RMJ) is fantastic and a less expensive way to get an RMJ. I have a loggerhead as well and prefer the Model 1 over it for camping and outdoor use

luethge luethge

I am hoping there will be a Model 3 that is a full tang version of the model 1. Basically a shrike with a model 1 profile.
