I will be ordering from Jantz and since they are 45$ a piece, my limited budget just lets me order one for now. So which one do you have or use most? 20, 30 or 40 lines per inch? I am leaning towards 20 lines per inch as the other ones seemed a little too fine but that's only a guess so I need your opinion. This would be more for spacers and such than thumb rests.

Thanks

Pat, the others are a bit fine for what we would normally use them for. I split the difference and bought a 30 and wish that I have bought a 20.

I have a 20 and a 30. The 30 hardly ever gets used. I would buy a 15 LPI if I could find one.

20 is almost too fine for most knife work. The bulk of jimping is 10 at the most.
A 20 has the ridges at .050" apart. Take a micrometer and look at that before dropping $45 plus shipping.

I have a 20 and works fine for me.It give plenty of grip without cutting you. I think a 10 would be great but I have never seen one.

I'd go 20 LPI

I've got a 40LPI I snagged off ebay for $20 brand new but IMHO it way too fine. My next one will be a 20 for sure.

Like I said, this is mostly for work on spacers, not jimping. But I'll still take a look at what 50 thou looks like.

Thanks guys.

Here is 20 LPI on a set of folder liners.

I think this is the 20 lpi, I know I bought the file from Jantz.

Thanks, I appreciate the pics guys. That let me know exactly what I wanted to know.
I'll get a 20 lpi but as others have said, a 15 or 10 would be even better.

20 is perfect, it does the job of providing grip where needed and won't chew up your thumb during heavy use. They were designed for checkering pistol grips. Going wider than 20 lpi (.050) would be uncomfortable during long shooting sessions.
Also check the price at Brownells, might be lower.

Thanks JBS. Like I said, this is mostly for texturing spacers so might not be as bad as a full grip but I'll keep that in mind.

I use 20 on all of my knives. I've been contemplating getting a 30 though for smaller knives and finer work.

I got a deal on a 30, hadn't used one 'till this thread came up and I went out and did a practice cut, I like it.

Definately 20 LPI. 30 and 40 might be good for smaller blades?. As far as a 10..... I have yet to be able to find one?? Or ANYTHING under 20LPI for that.

I just spent 1/2 day on the computer looking for checkering files. 20 lpi was the finest I could find. Best price was $37.57 for a Grobet Pillar Checkering file from B2Bprofessionaltools.com, 6" cut 00. This is file the people at Grobet USA recommemded.
