OK, I am had pretty well descided to buy a Swiss Army Tool, based in major part from info picked up here, I might add. Anyway, happened to see one in a shop some time ago and was impressed too. So, comes time to find a deal on one and I am suddenly confronted with a bunch of models! Now, I know I don't need the one made for fixing cars - don't have a car, so..... But can anyone explain the differnaces - aside from a leather or nylon sheath? SAK site is not helpful. I trust you guys! Thanks!

Just to clarify, all Swiss Army knives could be considered Swiss Army Tools, but I expect you are interested in the variants on the Victorinox SwissTool (the one built around a set of pliers).

Victorinox makes several different specialized tools for various purposes, but the general purpose one is just called the "SwissTool". It comes in three variations. Here is the feature list for the original SwissTool, taken from http://www.swissarmy.com/:
Pliers
Screwdriver (2mm)
Screwdriver (3mm)
Wire Cutter
Screwdriver (5mm)
Bottle Opener
Screwdriver (7.5 mm)
Large Blade
Serrated Blade
Metal File
Metal Saw
Wood Saw
Reamer/Punch
Phillips Screwdriver
Chisel/Scraper
Strong Crate Opener
Wire Bender
Wire Stripper
Wire Scraper
Can Opener
Ruler (9 inches)
Ruler (230mm)
Electrical Crimper
Lanyard Hole

The "SwissTool" X is identical to the original "SwissTool" except that scissors have been substituted for the serrated blade.

The "SwissTool RS" is a rescue variation with scissors and a serrated seat belt cutter substituted for the crate opener and the serrated blade.

There is also a "SwissTool CS" that includes a removable corkscrew, but that's all I know about it.

I used to carry the original SwissTool, but these days I would go for one of the variants with scissors instead.

I have the Swiss Tool and it's really first rate, though a tad heavy. But I also agree with bquinlan, because, if I had to do it over again, I too would opt for the model with the scissors.

Just wanted to add a small correction on Bobs post here above....

The "RS" model with the scissors and a serrated seat belt cutter replaces the serrated blade and the file on the original, NOT the crate opener.

I've got both of these models and use them about the same, only with my new job I had a need for scissors so I carry the RS while on the job.

Thanks for the correction. I used to have an RS but it has been too long for my memory... ...which is to say more than a week. :)
