Whistles? Which ones do you have? Which ones are good? All about whistles?

Good Day,

I am ordering some toys to play with, and whistles are one of them.

I have a couple, a Fox40 Classic, a Storm, an Acme 635, and an Acme 649. And I plan on getting an Acme Tornado 2000.

What other good whistles are there?

Let's talk about whistles.

Believe it or not, one of the best whistles I've found is one of those no name whistles that you see hanging on cards around where keys and key accessories are found. They are small, round, metal, and silver, and usually packaged on a green card. Very loud for small effort. I like them much better than the fancy anodized aluminum ones you get in backpacking stores.

As a child, my father insisted that I carry a whistle when we went out into the "bush". It was just a chromed brass model with a little cork ball and it worked okay. BUT, these days, I carry a Fox 40. Winter and summer, this is just the right size that it is easy to carry and definately loud enough. I made the mistake of trying it out for the first time inside my car with the windows rolled up.....yep, it's loud enough!

so for me, it's a Fox 40.

i keep an acme thunderer and a doan tool and a pocket knife all hoooked together in my thigh pocket, attached to the bow loop. this is a part of my survival kit along with a few bulion cubes, emergency space blanket, life boat matches, emergency tinder, and paper towels in a ziplock, all this fits in my thigh pocket when i am hunting in the mountains, i tried the thunderer at -20 degrees worked well on night.

I have a flat orange color plastic "Survival S.O.S Whistle" from Campmor (No. 84603-C) in my survival midi kit. It takes little space and claimed to give 'extremely high decibel with minimal effort'. '113 decibels at 2.5k'. if these numbers make any sense to anyone.
There is a plastic sport whistle as well as a whistle/match case/compass combo in my backpack for others in the party.
They are not Storm Whistles or any special. I should really try once one of those wonder-whistles. Are they really that good?
In my opinion, whistles are best to communicate, signal within the travelling party and avoid anyone getting lost. Other use is when one expects search party closeby and/or unable to make a more substantial emergency signal (fire) or move. Am I alone with this view?

Thank you all for your responses.

Diligence- I too carry a Fox40.

My brother has one of those, it is good, but I think the Fox40 is a bit louder.

In my testing, yes.

I think your first reason may just be the best of them, or at least the most likely to occur

I used to be a soccer referee. The whistle I had for that was the loudest whistle I've yet encountered. Just go to a sports store and get a ref's whistle.

Or if you want a unique sound that's also loud but that will attract a LOT of curious attention (for blowing when the BG is about to mug you) get an Acme siren whistle. They're available at just about any music store. I have one in my percussion stuff and it's rather loud. Test it before you buy though because some of them have unbalanced shafts which makes the fan perform poorly and reduces the volume and pitch of the whistle.

Thanks MDP, gotta get a look at them.
Shadowfax, any website with those Acme whistles?

shadowfax ,hi:
i bleieve the fox-40 is a referee's whistel. thats' what they use at my daughter's basketball games and my neighbor 's daughter's soccer

I have a storm but carry the Fox 40 because its smaller. my daughter always has one too. The importance thing is to have one

Thanks

Hi HM,

ACME Whistles has a nice website just go to:

http://www.acmewhistles.co.uk/

I carry an ACME Tornado 2000 with the side pieces ground off so the whole whistle is only about 3/8" thick and really packs a whallop.
I even carry soft earplugs as the sound that little ACME 2000 produces hurts my ears.

so nice to hear us talking about whistiles and signiling for a change! I have an old Acme Thuderer that I have carried forever, one thing also the scouts sell a signal mirror that is small enough that one can put it in a wallet, I have one in mine

Best
Todd (edgedance)

Bagheera and Shadowfax:
Thanks for the links. Although some of them are not cheap they are certainly seem to be aimed for a specific use.
Good points I bumped into:
1-orange plastic is better to find than black if dropped
2-metal whistles are heavier and might be more painful on your lips in cold (might even not want to detach

)
Thanks again,

HM
