Who are some low priced, custom knife makers who produce high quality work?

Who are some up and coming (or under appreciated), low priced, custom knife makers? With so many to choose from, and a limited budget, its hard to zero in on someone to concentrate on. I think David Farmer falls into this category - people love his knives, but the prices are very reasonable. His was my first custom knife and the little details make a big difference. It's easy to find a great looking knife for $250 or more, but finding one for less than 150 is a challenge.

Thanks for your input, and pics would be appreciated. I really don't have any specifications in mind (other than I'm not into fantasy knives) - I just looking for something that makes me say "that is a great knife!"

really either, fixed hold more fascination, while the folders are more useful - however I think the fixed blades tend to be more affordable - right?

You're correct, you're more likely to find inexpensive custom fixed blades than you are folders.

For fixed, I'd give Ben Tendick a look. He's a member here and makes this great little fixed that he calls the "bomb proof knife" or "BPK" that is rather affordable. I'm actually waiting for mine currently.

As for folders, Jeremy Robertson and Dustin Turpin do some excellent work for a good price. Jeremy's "El Patron" is one of the most solid knives I own and wasn't too hard on the wallet.

When I ordered, Ben was charging $115 I believe. If you google "BRT Bladeworks" you'll find his website and Facebook, I'd suggest contacting him to see if he's still taking orders or if that is the actual price.

I would suggest hanging out on the forums. I see a fare amount come up for sale in the $150 or under area. besides you may meet some cool people to boot...

I'd have to agree, Dustin Turpin does make a good folder. But like anyone good, there is a good wait...

Hard to give recommendations without knowing more specifics. For example, I like both bowies and puukkos. Finding a well-made 4" puukko, complete with sheath, for $250 isn't all that hard. OTOH you won't find a high quality, forged 10" bowie at that price. It certainly won't be coming with a great sheath.

Those CAS knives are gorgeous, but, going by looks, I have a suspicion that they will be out of my price range. Did you see the amazing series of photos they posted showing the steps to make an integral knife - wow.

You should give Robert Carter a try! His knives are tough!!

I just ordered my second one!!

CAS is low-priced? Looking at the knives, I'd think they were pricy. I'm going to need to email claudio now, methinks.

Darrin Sanders does good work as well, and his stuff is very reasonably priced. I use his heat treat service, and it's excellent.

Thanks for the reccomendation Nick. Scotchleaf, I really enjoy making full one off custom pieces. I work very closely with my customers via email and telephone to insure they get exactly what they want. All my stuff is warranted for life and I can meet your $150 price point unless you want a super expensive material. Feel free to email or call to discuss options and get a firm quote. All my contact info. is listed below.
