the best known custom knifemaker is probably gil hibben

while people here tend not to "appreciate" his production fantasy work...it is very well known and is is readily identifiable...to a lot of people...

i would suspect more people in the general population know that name than all the others combined!!

his regular custom work is also very nice .... and don't expect to get an order from him very soon

bob loveless is widely known...collectors of his work extend beyond the traditional custom knife realm. i knew of loveless from the sportsman world well before i had a specific interest in custom knives. he was a pioneer in the "custom collaboration" as well

those custom collaborations ...especially if on widely produced affordable knives... greatly increases name recognition. you can see ken onions name in almost every walmart ... pretty nifty gadget that speedsafe

other well known custom makers are those that have started production companies...people like emerson, reeve and the grandaddy of them all...bo randall

the guys who have made movie knives (ie lile, crain, sampson etc) are also more widely known because of the increased exposure from the movie tie-ins

If you search google using knifemaker names, you get a proxy for how well known a knifemaker is.

#Sites Maker

246 Sal Glesser
240 Kevin Cashen
216 Trace Rinaldi
157 Terry Primos

and
4,380,000 Britney Spears

This is a super sloppy way of estimating popular awareness, and it breaks down for certain names (Ron Newton, Kit Carson, Michael Walker) when there are too many other people who share the name. I had no idea there was a porn star named Shane Taylor until now.

Clearly a factory relationship drives a tremendous amount of awareness for particular knifemaker's names.

Bob Engath. He didn't make that many knives during his career, but he single handedly dragged alot of people into custom knife making with his knife blanks.

And I'll add:
Howard Viele
RH Ruana
Gray Taylor
Billy Mace Imel
George Herron
John Nelson Cooper

Bill Bagwell ofcourse, surprised I'm the first to mention him.

And Mad Dog!

GB ya should've asked that question the other way, who were the least well known you might have got a smaller list.:)

Living or dead? people that actually make knives one at a time? by themselves?
Loveless, Scagel, Fowler, Goddard, Terzuola, Emerson, Elishewitz, Marlowe, Ralph, the lit goes on..

I guess, that worldwide, because of his collaboration with CRKT, Pat Crawford is one of the best known knifemakers.

The Makers who I strive to create knives like, Bill McHenry, Jason Williams, Don Hanson, Richard Wright, George Dailey, and Wayne Vallochovic.
