I know there's been some controversy regarding this design and other companies so hopefully this doesn't get into that.. But GPKnives posted this picture on Facebook the other day of some Anthony marfione knives..

That's gotta be the designer of the 777 right?

The Zero Tolerance 0777 was an in-house design by ZT not MicroTech. I think mostly designed by Jim McNair of KAI/ZT.

I believe MicroTech copied the design and actually released the Matrix before the ZT 0777.

You've been here since 2012 and you are bringing this up? Is this a troll thread.

The zt0777 was designed in house. Jim played a pretty big part in it.

The 0777 debuted first. Microtech copied it right down to the backspacer and got it to market first.

Also, the current matrix is slightly different than the original so as not to be such an obvious ripoff.

Not necessarily a troll thread, but it could be an honest question. Not everyone has the same knowledge (factual or perceived) as others. I believe RamZar covered it in a nutshell.

No troll thread. I knew about Microtech copying the 0777 and releasing it first. When the 0777 was released I wasn't as much into ZTs as I am now because I couldn't afford them then. I wasn't aware it was an in-house design. The knife above is not a microtech and looks ridiculously like a 0777. That's what brought my question up.

And FWIW I asked on the GPknives post on Facebook first to get some insight but after a few days of no one answering I thought I'd try here. Since this is an entirely different knife than the microtech I figured it wouldn't be an issue.

Don't worry about it dude.

Kershaw is perhaps my current favorite production company and I like ZT designs too but, I don't research which makers design their stuff and had no clue who had a hand in it other than just "ZT."

You can't be expected to know everything about all knives just because you've been here awhile. It was an honest question (that actually provided some insight for me, even as a KAI fan.)

Marfione is Microtech.

Great design by the in house team at ZT :)
Ha nice edit. I suppose this thread could be closed. Had I known Marfione was microtech I never wouldve asked. No wonder no one at GPknives would touch that. My knife knowledge is mostly KAI centric.

Wasn't there a russian who claimed the ZT 777 looked like it was inspired by his designs? This might just be my memory mixing up things, but I believe it was mentioned on bladeforums a long time ago.

No. Dimitry Sinkevich I think was the first person to use a sub frame lock. The actual knife looked nothing like the 0777 but that didn't stop people from throwing accusations around.

Ok, this makes more sense. Sorry for jumping the gun. I assumed you knew Marfione was Microtech.

I was thinking that I had heard that Tommy Lucas (?), (the designer of the Skyline and others) designed the Tilt (he is now in the Shun division, I believe), but I could be wrong. I'll have to do a search now, got my curiosity aroused!

Jimmer5 (Jim McNair) was the head of the 0777 team. I don't think they have said who else was on the team.
