Among the well know such as Worden, Keating, Vunak and Janich as well as less well know instructors who is by your estimation imparting the most effective and reality based training for blade combatives and self defense, and why do you think so? Can be videos or face to face.

I have always liked marc animal macyoung for videos, about the face to face training I trained with Michael Dalba regularly in SF, I guess he would be what you mean by a less well known instructor but he was featured in Greg Walkers book about knife fighting. I was interested in him for the knife fighting but he was more into mixed martial arts and almost never got into knives with his students. He used to be with Hwa Rang Do same thing that Michael Ecanis was studying but he told me the grandmaster was too inflexible for him so he broke away. It was a pretty good experience, I sweated alot more than in any traditional karate type class I ever took. Dont know if that helps but I thought it would be better than 0 replies.

I respect and admire Fred Perrin, because he seems to have a lot of knowledge with regards to improvised weapons from days of survival on the streets. I don't think he is an instructor though.

I gotta go with the Atienza Kali Guros: Carl, Allain, and Darryl. They were trained by their father and they have tons of experience using the FMAs on the streets of Jamaica, Queens. They have gone through some of the roughest shit you can imagine and they are still standing today, strong, promoting the FMAs as a survival method and as a way to get into the Filipino culture. I can't help but admire that. I've learned more about the Filipino martial arts from them than anyone else I have trained with.

I agree, Fred is great. And he is an instructor, he runs a school, and travels all over Europe teaching both civilian, military, and LEO.

Another top notch instructor is Guru Stevan Plinck.
Thanks, Terry

I've been studying martial arts on and off (TKD, Northern Shaolin Wu Shu, some Kali and Jeet Kune Do) over the years. Of the current line-up of big name instructors, no one has impressed me as much as what I've seen of Kelly Worden in his Destroy, Trap and Lock video.

Almost every movement he executes in the video looks like it's going to end up hurting the other guy. He's got some pretty solid credentials--he trains the US Army's First Special Forces Group in hand-to-hand combat. He also received a favorable word from the original commander of Seal Team Six, Richard Marcinko.

Seriously, if the Green Berets figure this guy is good enough to teach them, that's good enough for me.

With that criteria, then I would have to say Tuhon Chris Sayoc, Sr.
The Sayoc Tactical Group headed by Tom Kier has done a LOT of work with SF from many branches of the military in edged weapon combatives.

Sayoc Kali

"I've trained with many experts over my 24 years as a Navy SEAL and the information I've found to be the most efficient and well-rounded is the Sayoc Kali knife fighting techniques. You will acquire an exceptional proficiency with a knife beyond anything you thought possible."

Michael Jaco
Originator / Head Instructor for the Navy SEALs Combat Fighting Course

I've trained with Worden several times and Keating a couple. You know both those guys are among the best in the world for sure. Michael Janich is in that catagory as well. I like some of the concepts Sayoc brings to the table, and the practical nature of Fred Perrin.

Check out Vladimir Vasiliev and Systema, it's a very deceptive art, these guys look like they are just relaxing and having a great time as they deal out the punishment, very interesting to watch and effective.

For knife combatives both James Keating and Kelly Worden have phenomenal skill, though they also address empty hand combatives too.

I have worked with Michael Janich and really like his methods. Kelly McCann is another instructor that is well versed in all areas, armed and unarmed.

The DeThouars family...especially Willem DeThouars...

Always in Hormat,

Bill Maniotes

I would add Gabe Suarez to the list, and also Tom Sotis. Both are great instructors with great skill sets, and good guys as well. Kelly Worden and James Keating are on my list of instructors to train with in person.

Here are some that I have trained with and have the most respect for. Guro Dan Inosanto, Grandmaster Giron, Steve Tarani, Hock Hochheim, James Keating, Guro Ricardo Kayana (SP??) with Sayoc Kali, Guro Jeff Chung, Tuhon Ray Dionaldo w/ Sayoc Kali, Marc Denny w/ Dog Brothers, E. Emerson, Mike Janich, Bram Franks, Ben Salas.
